I got this item from Gunther as a reward for an artefact. Does anyone know how it is supposed to be used?

I understand that there would be a drum sound when the player walk past, but is it for decorative purpose or?

Pretty sure it's just a drum, not sure what else drums do in-game or real life other than make noise.

Decorative purpose, most of the things Gunther gives you are decorations.

It's a decoration for either your farm or your house. Whenever you walk past it it makes a drum noise, or whenever you right click it, it makes various drum noises.

I wanted to use it as a warning when my animals wander too far... but it works only with the player :/ Therfore there's no actual use for it, maybe as a doorbell when u enter home?

You later on get a flute block, too. By right clicking it changes (and always keeps) the percussion sound, or flute pitch. Think of it as a way to make a new tune for a relaxing stroll around your farm.
