Buy Stardew Valley OST and add in $100 Tip.
Works every time.
Even there CHuckeFish will get a cut of his money. And btw: why do you hate ChuckleFish?
Probably because Starbound is forever in early access for few years and will probably die in early access.
Starbound, I would guess.
Damn them for not warning us that it was a early access game and forced the unfinished game on us. Curses!
And instead of putting his effort into the game...Tiy goes around looking for indie studios to gobble up and "publish" , like he actually has the oomph to do such a thing being a poorly built indie studio owner himself. It's like the Indie version of EA.
I still remember when they anounced Starbound ...and then right after said they were going to Publish Wanderlust. Seriously.....
Not to mention getting tired of reading daily dev blogs where they say "We just overhauled the way ____ works" ..by making it do exactly what they overhauled months prior when they said they just overhauled it; like they *just* did it for the first time.
Starbound / Chucklefish is like that friend that always has a story behind why he can't pay you back the $20 he still owes you, while buttering you up with a new venture capital plan that'll get them the money they need to pay you back.
They didn't. Everyone that bought the game prior to 2 years ago was either doing so as a pre-order ( without early access to the game ) or when the game was "Released".
It was only after its release showed just how much the game was botched that they changed it to Beta 1 / Early access to save face.
all the money chucklefish will get will be spent on keeping the official stardew valley site and wiki alive, since chucklefish hosts stardew forums, site and wiki
i was a bit hesitant at the beginning too but its probably around 1$ cut
Yeah I'm sure ConcernedApe gets more than 3/4 of the money still.
Publishing and developing games are entirely different functional sets, though. Plus, as far as I'm aware, they supported Stardew Valley with additional asset creation and actual dev resources (QA especially) as well. I'm also not sure if "gobble up" is the right word - they haven't bought any of them - all of these studios could decide to do their own thing at any time.
"It's like the indie version of EA": well, erm, yeah, the key business of games publishers is, umm, publishing games. That is something you can do on a smaller or a larger basis. It works the same way in the music industry: there are plenty of small labels that work with mostly independent artists because many artists don't have the resources and know-how to hire marketing agencies or even rent a recording studio reliably.
I agree that progress on Starbound is painfully slow, but it's a good game nonetheless. They made some money off that project and it's just reasonable of them to invest it into other devs in genres and projects similar to what they have experience with. I really fail to see the problem here.
Umm.. Seems like a lost cause then.
And yes, it is because of Starbound. I preordered it on the first day it was announced.
The reason is exactly like what @JoeShmo said.
Kind of like the way @Kazaanh think tho. I know dev put a lot of work into this.
And the game is certainly good from what I know.
I'll sleep on this and see if I can get pass the hate for ChuckleFish with Starbound's work.
They may be differing functional sets, but Tiy does both ( or did ); so when hes out trying to get another indie studio into a publishing deal..hes not around to work on the game. He's basically "walked" away from the game years ago. He'll make a blog post every now and then.
It's really all to reminicent to Double Fine; garnishing multiple funding outlets just to keep your own game afloat, or rather using your still in development game as some sort of "badge" that keeps you relevant; allowing you to keep getting more funding.
The remark about EA was not bout "what publishing is about" but in that EA spends more time gathering publishing deals with companies that are actually making decent games ..while their own games tank ( if they bother to make one ). EA use to be a solid game brand ...now it's just a publisher logo. Chucklefish ...is going down that route. This gives people reason to hate them...because of Starbound.
It's rather similar to when Activision acquired Blizzard. Blizzard game(s) became the "crutch" that Activision used to garner publishing deals / keep afloat. Meanwhile, the Blizzard IP has suffered greatly since.
And since Chucklefish has had such a hard time getting its own game off the ground, I really doubt they are sparing many, if at all, resources into helping the dozen developers they are publishing; as some have thought to insinuate. For all intents and purpose...they're just publishing for the money; and I also doubt it's at a "modest" 5-10% rate.
I got starbound in the 2013 and I have seen what they are capable off. If you and your team reworks the combat system for the 3 or 4th then its something wrong.
Not to mention that game was supposed to be released in the 2013, I won't mention also how they treated their community by banning everyone and insulting the fans even when the criticism was valid. Old fans are not coming back to lick their feets again, they reputation is already stained.
