How well does this play with Gamepad/Controller?
Hi

I just watched an LP of Stardew Valley and now totally want to play this game.
However I can't play a lot with mouse/keyboard.

Steam says, it has "Partial Controller Support". But what exactly does this mean?
Is it playable with Gamepad?
How well does it work?
Does it feel like actual gamepad controls (like in Harvest Moon on the consoles), or do you have to move around the mouse-cursor with the Analog-Stick?

From what I understand (and I've only played with keyboard/mouse while I do have a controller), almost everything you do can be done with the controller *fairly* easily, excluding menu navigation. From threads I've seen here, that should be done with a mouse/keyboard simply because it is far easier.

If anyone who does play with a controller sees this, I'm sure they'll have better information for you.

i play with a controller and it works nice. for some stuff you need to use the mouse though (open the journal for example).

not sure if its just me, but i think one of the last updates produced some gamepad bugs. the A button sometimes doesnt register anymore and when i try to use the axe inside of the house, it picks up the carpet. have to change to mouse and keyboard for a while, when that happens.

using an xbox 360 controller btw.

I play w/ a 360 controller, and it's fine most times. the fall fair i couldn't use it for the slingshot game, and I still prefer to place furniture and walls w/ the mouse, but otherwise there's nothing that takes away from the fun. ^.^ @zero it made diagonal go well, but I agree. Sometimes you also go in the wrong direction after closing the inventory screen since then, and other issues.

Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Hmmm ... that's a bit sad.
I really don't want to use the mouse at all, since it gives me pain.
Hope, the Gamepad-Controls will be reworked.

Or I might try to play it with the Steam Controller.
However, I'd prefer to have some more conventional gamepad controls on a game like this (it's very similar to Harvest Moon after all).
It's just more comfortable.

I use a PS4 controller and it works perfectly since I've got a touchpad right on the controller any time using the mouse cursor is preferable lol

The more gameplay of this game I watch, the more I want to play it. :>

But please, please, please make a control scheme without the Cursor (for Controller)! :Neko:
Do it for the chicken! :SBchicken:

i've been using an old 360 controller since i first started, the only downside is having to adjust the cursor with the right stick every once in a while. instead of snapping in front of your character or something logical, it kinds just hangs around wherever you last left, invisible until you activate it again

This deserves full controller support. Not something where you have to adjust with a mouse or write on a keyboard. Any chance that'll happen?

Steam Controller here, everything works like a dream, right pad moves mouse cursor, shoulder buttons replicate left and right click.

Actually to me the controls are rather impractical even if I'd use a mouse.
Also in every LP I watched so far, people are constantly misclicking stuff and use tools, when they didn't want to.

Don't want to sound too negative, but in all honesty the controls are the only thing right now, which prevent me from buying and playing this game.

And yes, I am kind of "lazy" in that regard.
But this seems like the perfect game to relax a bit. However I can't relax, when I'm struggeling with the controls.
(Also I have yet to see any reason for the mouse cursor in this game. I just don't get it.)

I use the controller almost exclusively and it works great aside from the "A button" problem which is fairly minor. The only thing you'll need to use the keyboard for is typing and the other aforementioned things.

It seems that the "A" button isn't working because your cursor is currently hovering over the quickslot bar and the game doesn't really recognize the button press until you move it from there. Move your right stick around and try it then. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

What's actually going on is that your mouse cursor overrides what direction your facing, giving you more control in certain situations and obviously getting in the way when you forget to move the cursor a few inches away from your avatar.

After the first couple hours I now have the habit of sliding the cursor to the corner of the screen, I play with a Steam Controller, I would imagine if I was playing with my mouse and keyboard I would have gotten the habit of doing so even quicker.

Whatever your method of control may be do not let it keep you from experiencing this game, it really is worth dealing with the controls. :100:

Thing to remember is the original game concept this is based off came out for the original game boy (which I played when it came out... I am an ol fart) so modern controller play works quite well. Mouse can just make certain things like watering and gathering a bit faster by being able to zigzag mouse. Not sure if can hold gather and with thumbstick.

The controls could use a few tweaks in my opinion.
Since the beginning I play with a 360 controller and most of the time there are no problems.
Unless the mouse decides to block things or target somewhere else.

using a controller for 90% of the activities in game is fine (I do so too), but certain tasks can either be much more efficient or much less of a pain if you use the mouse for assistance. placing buildings/digging/watering are things where I move my char with the controller (left hand) and do the task with the mouse (right hand) - there are a few tiny things, like placing buildings/items diagonal to your character (sometimes necessary) which - as far as I can tell - are completely impossible to achieve with a controller (which gives you four directions of "actions")
