Gifting gold-star items
Does anyone know wether gifting gold- or silver-star items gives a larger friendship boost than the normal versions?

I'm pretty sure it does. What doesn't seem to affect how much friendship you get is the actual value of the item. A cheap 'like' is the same as a very pricey 'like' of the same quality, from what I've gathered. Otherwise, you could marry Leah by the end of summer with just cabbage.

I'm curious about this too. I've been gifting gold star items but it doesn't seem to really be doing much.

One of the biggest impacts is when you give a gold-star "love" on a birthday. Lots of multipliers in play. Almost always an instant +2 full hearts.

I've always tried to give gold star items on people's birthdays because I didn't want to waste the birthday, but for Emily's birthday, I didn't have any high quality rubies so I gave her a regular ruby and she went from 3 hearts to 6. :squirtooh:
