Just hit my first winter. Not having winter crops was pretty stupid imo. I've already done all the mining and finished the cave, so I've been fishing which is pretty boring.

Upgrade your tools to steel/gold, grind the mine for resources, level up fishing/sell fish. Get the winter seed bundle in the Community Center for a few winter seeds to plant.

I spent the first winter in the mines. The ore came in useful for making huge amounts of sprinklers, kegs and preserves jars for the next year.

If you have any crops saved up you can make them into beer/wine/jelly for more money.

Prepare for Spring. Fish, mine, and take care of animals to amass money for seeds. Figure out your crop layout for Spring. Work on your relationships with the townsfolk.

I personally went hunting for all the community center/joja mart bundles...

Winter is the perfect moment to just get ready for a much more productive season. Take that time off from the field to cutdown more trees, get gifts, do quests, mines and fishing.

crab pods, fishing, mining, lumber chopping, green house

lol I'm heading for my first winter and can't wait for it just to get a break from crops and prepare for a better spring. I'll finish the mine, upgrade tools, will probably settle on a chick (can't marry in winter and no heart lvl high enough in mid-fall so...)...

Man, winter may be more tireing than the rest after all... O.o

There's no purchasable seeds, but you can make and grow the winter seed packets (10 seeds per craft). You also get 30 of the seeds for doing the Winter Foraging bundle at the Community Center.

Other than that, animals still exist for winter, as well as the options everyone else listed above.

Fish or mine.. You can also make a seedmaker if your farming level is high enough and turn winter roots in to winter seeds.. for more seeds

If you fish you can gain a lot of levels pretty easy.. and you can also easily finish out hte mine if you haven't or stock up on some ores.. You can also vist the forest daily to gather up a bunch of hardwood (12 per day)..

You can also spend the time to gift/talk to some of the more neglected citizens if some just aren't seen offen in your daily routines...

So winter can be as productive as the other months if you want it to be just in a different way..

I just started winter and I'm alternating between hoeing the beach for lots of Snow Yams, Winter roots and clay then fishing and going to the mines to get enough ore to upgrade my tools some more.

I used half my winter making more money than Spring and summer hoeing the beach and quarry for the Winter roots and yams.

Upgraded all tools to Gold and got a Big coop, also bought a dozen summer trees to start my brewing business as a main money maker. Made more Bee hives and prepared the fields for coming summer with my sprinklers and 4 shiny Iridium sprinklers.
My goodness the fishing is profitable.

Well don't know where this misconsception of Winter = No crops come from (see it in lot of game like this one), but just for information, there is plenty of different type of things that can grow on winter...

Principally bulbs, they are frost resistant.

Onions and garlic for exemple can be cultivated without trouble in winter, they even resist frost and snow.

There is a Winter variety of Leeks too.

And just so you know, Most of fruits tree should be planted during winter, that way the low temperature frost the shell around the seed, and when winter end and temperatures rises, the weakened shell shatter, allowing the seed to grow. (This is by far the best method to have fruit trees highly resistant to cold).

Carrots, broad bean, pea...

There is more.

The most important thing with winter crops, is that you need to prepare the field with protection,
like tunels to protect from snow or other elements, scattering straw on the ground where the seeds are, to prevent the earth to frost by keeping a warm temperature on the ground.

Well, all this to say, yep we can cultivate some things during winter without a greenhouse.
