I had even tried lowering and increasing the desktop setting for mouse-click speed, thinking I had it too slow/fast for the game or something, heh. Didn't help tho.
Immeadiatly click-and-hold left mouse.
Wait for the sound cue and/or the yellow exclamation mark.
Release mouse button.
You'll see the fish and the vertical fight-to-land-the-catch UI.
Click the mouse to raise the green bar. Release to let it drop.
Keep the green bar behind the fish.
In the begining, the green bar will be small, and the fish will be jumpy. You won't catch many. Try for Carp (lakes) they're sluggish.
Even if all you catch is trash, you're still skilling up. Skilling up increases the size of the green bar, making it easier. Save the trash, you can convert it to building materials later.
Each fish type has it's own behavior pattern, which, you'll need to learn if you want to catch that kind.
