Making money with cooking?
It seems like everything I can cook doesn't produce a profit.

Maki Rolls cost roughly 300 gold worth of materials but only sell for 220. However, they make great gifts.

This goes for just about everything I can cook; the raw materials are worth more than the final product.

Are there only a select few items that actually have good margins? I mean, cooking is fantasic if you want to give a gift to someone, but other than that I don't really see cooking as a good investment.

I have not unlocked all of the dishes yet, so maybe there are some that have a high value, but from everything I've unlocked thus far I don't see cooking as a good idea for making money.

considering the part of the menu that shows all the cooking items you've made goes by how many you've cooked and not how many you've shipped like everything else they're probably not intended to be a money making item.

CA has talked about this last year, he made cooking less / no profit, to discourage player cooking 24/7 or something like that. Cooking is great for gifts tho.

Also good for getting those strong energy boosts to stave off exhuastion and get more intense work done. =]

I made some meager profits by crafting tortillas. Would be cool If ConcernedApe make an overhaul of cooking to make it viable.

I was really hoping that cooking allowed the player to get SOME type of money considering you have to...
1. spend time getting the money and materials needed to make the house expansion.
2. spend the time to get the ingredients needed to make the dishes.
3. spend the money and time to get farm buildings, to get animals, to get specific materials...

I don't know. I understand that this project was accomplished by one person, and It's a really fantastic game. However, I wish that cooking was, in some way, profitable.

I guess possibly adding a mini game to cooking that would directly impact your food's ranking would be cool.

Like, a gold star dish would sell for maybe 1.5 times the amount of money in materials it costs to make.
A silver star dish would sell for 1.25 times the cost of materials.
A normal dish would sell at cost.

Maybe make it so that cooking has its own skill tree that made the mini game easier.

At this point I'm basically hoping someone comes along, reads this post, and considers putting these ideas into a mod for the game because I know what I'm asking would take an insane amount of time to actually integrate into the base game.

I actually agree that it would be nice to have the option of making some money from cooking, although I completely understand why the Dev made it this way, you are supposed to be a farmer, not a Chef.

That being said, you are (or should be) making (farming) the ingredients. I think there could be a balance struck, i.e. some profit but not too much. Or perhaps even only profit if you farmed the ingredients yourself, no (or very little) profit if you bought the ingredients.

That would make some sense, you could distinguish food/meals made using your own farming ingredients as "organic food/meals" and so more valuable.

That would ensure that the heart of the game (farming) could not be negated if you wanted to sell food/meals for profit. Gives you another play style and dimension to your characters story, if you choose.

To make it even more interesting you could buy a Chefs hat or something, & require very high cooking skill in order to make a worthwhile profit, but I deffo think would enjoy having the option of doing a playthrough where making more specialized food products is my thing.

Some farms do go a step further than just the basics. In fact maybe with added content in the future the Dev could consider letting us open our own Farm Restaurant, again, that's not unheard of in the world of farming. & The fact that it would take a lot of dedication and work (taking away from other things potentially) would mean players would have to make choices about how to spend their time.

Perhaps it would be a nice option to have as a post 2nd year thing, like maybe it could be something you can really only fully achieve when the main story is over.

Interesting stuff to think about I think.

I love these thoughts on enhancing the role of cooking, recipes, and potential new game play options -- especially that of a restaurant.

I know that the creator doesn't want cooking to be a significant money maker or focus but It could even be as simple as your own farm stand.

Maybe the farm stand would only be available to you once you've completed the "Gourmet Chef" achievement? It could also be something that you only use in, perhaps, the summer season? Or it could open late in the game...like year 4 or 5? That would certainly make it more of a reach goal which is something I definitely need as I close in on year 5. Not that anyone would want to compete with Pierre's store ;) but I think the foodie nature of this game is pretty significant so I'd love to see more. Plus, I'm married to Elliot and he could really use a job that doesn't involve just giving me morning coffee and fretting about his hair.

PS: I was a bit sad when I realized that the hat rewarded for the Gourmet Chef achievement is a green archer's cap. I'd love for that to be changed to a Chef's hat. I farm in a tiara. A chef's hat wouldn't be that much more silly ;)

That's pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stupid. Cooking is a career, just like farming, mining, etc. It's more of a career than foraging is. If someone wants to make their money by cooking, they should be allowed to. Just like they can choose to make their money by focusing on farming, or focusing on combat, or focusing on animals. It's honestly a pretty ♥♥♥♥ move to say "♥♥♥♥ you for wanting to be a chef. That's not a real job"

Just like you're a farmer, not a warrior. And you're a farmer, not a forager. And you're a farmer, not a miner. And you're a farmer, not a shepherd. And your a farmer, not an angler.

This is good to finally figure out! I have a whole chest full of stuff I've cooked, thinking I might need them later (for more complicated recipes or for quests). I can now free up a whole chest and stop wasting time trying to get ingredients for a new dish.
