X is the equivalent of left clicking, so holding X makes the bar move up

Just hold it?

I will try.. I've probably been repeatedly tapping it (that worked on my forst attempt).

I should clarify, that by "the bar" I mean the bob in the minigame, not the progress bar. sorry about that

I assume you know how to cast to the distance you want. When you've done that, hold down X again until the controller vibrates to let you know you've got a bite. Release X as soon as this happens. Holding down X isn't necessary here, but only having to release it rather than pressing it and releasing it again makes for quicker reaction times.

Your goal is to keep the green bar behind the fish icon that will move up and down, until the bar on the right reaches the top. The bar on the right will fill when the green bar is behind the fish and fall when it's not.

Pressing and holding X will cause the green bar to move up, while releasing it will cause the bar to fall. By repeatedly tapping the X button, you can make the green bar basically stay in place, or move up/down slowly by varying the speed you tap.

I found it a bit tricky at first, but as your fishing skill increases and you get better rods, the fishing minigame will become easier! I actually quite like it now.

Hope this helps.

You go to the store and buy a controller.

Oh, what's that? You don't want to? Well, then, let's assume OP has a mouse and answer the question instead. They're both valid control styles.

I'm feeling extra :steamsalty: today, don't know why.

Fwiw, I find the fishing a better challenge than the "hit a button fast!" styles of most HM games.
