Search outside of town, near the wizard tower and places like that.

Forage the forest and the backroad.

You almost never find anything in the town.

the spice berries at first are hard to track down, i suggest while exploring mow down every grass/foliage to make the foraging berries spawn,.

Am I searching for a specific plant to forage from like the spring berry? or is it a ground spawn?

They appear in random locations outside your farm and the town. This is one place where I highly recommend planting MIXED SEEDS every season if you have them. (Don't throw them away!) If you plant a bunch of mixed seeds and let them grow to maturity, they will crank out a whole crapload of those wild fruits/veggies that can only be foraged.
