How do I use my Furnance? (Smelting Question)

So I made the furnance but I'm confused on how I can actually use it. I tried to put things in there (mouse click) but it doesn't do anything at all.

Description - Now that you've built a furnace, you can smelt some metal. According to Clint's instructions, if you place 5 copper ore and 1 piece of coal in the furnace, if should produce a copper bar."

What you need is the five ore and the one coal per five ore in your inventory. Hold the copper and use it on the furnace. It will automatically take the coal from your inventory then you will see it operating. After a period of time, a copper bar will be available to remove from the furnace. It held me up as well because it is not instant return.

Step 1: Face the furnace
Step 2: Put your 1 coal in hand
Step 3: Click the furnace
Step 4: Repeat step 2&3 with 5 pieces of copper
Step 5: Wait 30 minutes....Profit!

Thanks for the tips guys! You use the cooper first (and it will auto subtract the coal) like twistedmelon said. I was doing coal first which didn't work.

Is there a time requirement to meet before the ore is smelted?

Yes. You have to wait for some time, not sure how long but not very long. You can just do other activity and when you back it should be done.
