100% crash on launch (and fix)
So I just downloaded and installed but on running I get an instant crash, 100% repro. There was no useful error, just that the game had stopped working. I decided to attach a debugger and turns out it was an exception trying to load the XNA 4.0 libs which I didn't have installed. So easy fix at least, go and download the right redist and install myself.

This should really be part of first steam run process though (e.g. first boot installs dependencies), or at the least tell me why it's failed, not explode because of an exception. If I didn't have VS installed and decide to investigate myself I probably would have instantly refunded because there's nothing I could have done about it. Luckily I'm in and playing now though. Hopefully this helps other people and gets changed moving forward.

EDIT: Kakoen87 pointed out below this file actually *is* on your PC, just doesn't install, you can find it here:

...\Steam\steamapps\common\Stardew Valley\_CommonRedist\XNA\4.0

or as GrishordGames points out, download from:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=20914

EDIT: I have nothing to do with the game, I just had this specific issue when I bought it and wanted to share in-case it helps anyone else. Sorry for those of you it doesn't help, probably best to ask the Devs for help! :)

For those doing everything here and it still not working, try these solutions straight from ConcernedApe:

(1) delete the startup_preferences folder in %AppData% (just doing this worked for me and I found it located at C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\StardewValley)
(2) On this site (http://freewisdoms.com/downlo ad-dll-files-commonly-used-by- games/) you can download a package and then try to insert the downloaded SysWOW64 and the System 32 folder into the Windows folder.

Good luck :)

Thanks man, deleting the "startup_preferences" worked for me :)

TLDR: I fixed the XNA problem by reinstalling the game, thought yall should know

I realize that this is a very old thread. But I ran into this problem today and I tried all the fixes I could find on youtube, forums, and everywhere. Tried all the steps everyone mentioned above and was not able to fix it. Including trying on different speakers, headphones to different ports. Tried with default sound device set to everything. Reinstalled XNA, .net from stardew folder and from online. Reinstalled sound driver. and rebooting every step. Deleted all imaginable folders...

Was about the give up and thought, why not, let me try reinstall the game. Go library, delete game, install, play.

Boom, it worked. *wipe tears* *drop mic*

I'll never tell I am a software dev...

Im not sure what does "100%" in your title stand for,but without any offense, on this whole thread there is no 100% solution for this issue, so please rename title. It maybe works for some but not for everyone. Ive personaly tried every friggin tip i saw online. From reinstaling Xna, Visual studio, direct X, graphic and audio drivers, giving exceptions in firewalls, giving permissions in folders. restarting after every and each step, pluging and unpluging headphones and speakers (switching between them), checking each box in compatibility tab under games properties, running it from game install directory, deleting folder in appdata, and every other thing every1 was suggesting and i can say with 1100% certainty IT DOES NOT WORK!. Thanks ;)
did you find a solution?

I had a crash with my save in the latest beta, turns out it was to do with fulscreen mode. So I went to my save file and changed fulscreen from true to false and it worked.

My problem for this was fixed already see your XNA file. I hope it fixed yours too!

I'm still having this problem and have done all of the above. It's getting frustrating not being able to play.

Yes, I went into the XNA file and did all that. I uninstalled and reinstalled, rebooted my computer. I even went in and deleted every one of my saves. Still nothing.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Not sure if this applies to anyone else, but I have discovered my issue to be a result of a Windows bug. I believe my clr.dll file for .NET is corrupt and unfixable by scan. This bug affects other apps as well, not just Stardew Valley. The app I noticed failing is the Ear Force Audio Hub.

Try downloading the Ear Force Audio Hub. If this program doesn't work, you may have the same issue as me. The error appears in Event Viewer as some variant of "Failing Module: Microsoft XNA 4.0 / clr.dll."

I haven't yet solved my issue, but I believe some possible solutions might include:
- Resetting my PC to factory
- Reinstalling Windows

Hope this helps you diagnose your own issue.

I've been having the same issue for a clearly different reason. The game crashes immediately upon launch, no sign of any crash report or log, just stops working. The thing is, I've had this game for almost a month and a half now and have never had trouble before. I've restarted my computer, reinstalled the game itself more than once, and even reinstalled steam. I tried launching the game from local files, no dice. Same thing happened. I tried running the application manifest in the local files and got myself an error report, but it didn't particularly help, only giving me this:

ERROR SUMMARY
Below is a summary of the errors, details of these errors are listed later in the log.
* Activation of C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stardew Valley\Stardew Valley.application resulted in exception. Following failure messages were detected:
+ Downloading file:///C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/Stardew Valley/chickenIcon_32_32.ico.deploy did not succeed.
+ Could not find file 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stardew Valley\chickenIcon_32_32.ico.deploy'.
+ Could not find file 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stardew Valley\chickenIcon_32_32.ico.deploy'.
+ Could not find file 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stardew Valley\chickenIcon_32_32.ico.deploy'.

What I gather from this, the chicken icon has gone missing. Sure enough, I go to look and there is absolutely no file name after that in the directory. I don't know if replacing it would help run the game, and even if it would I have not a clue how to find a replacement. Hoping that's not the problem, I move on to the other file that caught my attention. The file I had just opened had been labeled "Application Manifest" while there was another file labeled only "MANIFEST". However, upon double-clicking, I find I have no applications on my computer compatible with that file type. I have tried just about everything I can think of, and nothing has worked so far. I have tried repairing the XNA files, and it didn't work. If anybody can help me out, that'd be very much appreciated. Thank you to anyone who can help out or at least tried to.

Have you tried deleting startup preference at C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\StardewValley. It now gives me an error when I close the program, but that doesn't really matter.

My issue apparently had to do with an incompatible resolution. If nothing else worked for you, click the little square at the top right of the screen before loading the save file.
