Report a translation problem
In HM you went to a store, and paid money and lumber to have someone build a few preset things (bigger barn, chicken coop, larger house, a greenhouse, stuff like that) in preset locations on your farm. It looked like from the bit of stream I watched, which im actively avoiding so i probably do miss a lot (the concept pisses me off, you guys get it for free before any of us for as i see it no good reason just because youve got a youtube account, while none of us got to play or have input into the beta, but thats not the topic here.), made it look like you crafted items and place them yourself.
Also I guess SV seems to lack relationships between the spare marriage candidates, in HM each one of them seemed to typically have someone they would marry if you didnt.
Harvest moon is about farming and building relationships with people, which honestly comes very close to stardew valley. However, when i look at stardew valley, it seems like the features that were rather poorly implemented in harvest moon sometimes, are now more enhanced in stardew valley.
Don't get me wrong, i enjoyed nearly every harvest moon game so far (except lost valley, which resembles minecraft quite a bit, with freedom of building- the character design shook me off though) but i think stardew valley might be a better expierience.
Speaking of better expierences- Rune factory 4 is basically even closer to stardew valley than harvest moon is. Rune factory 4 is set in an RPG fantasy world AND has all aspects of harvest moon + a lot of extra stuff that i could not even all get a hold of in my 80 hours of gameplay. You can tame and ride mosnters and even boss monsters, there are hybrid humans- some of them even become your friends and move to town, you can even marry some of them.
Even the farming, while faster to get into, feels improved a lot. You have soil-quality in hard numbers, growth rates, size variants in crops, defense of soil (basically weather resistance) and soil Hitpoints and much more. You can even grow crops out of season but they will grow slower, which is nice, to level crops. Yes- you can level crops. Harvest moon has that to some aspect but rather ... unfun. You buy fertalizer, that is it. In runefactory your soil quality improves if you plant the right stuff, like crops that are good for the soil, like strawberrys or yam. If you harvest crops on good soil with a sickle you get higher level seeds. If you sell these seeds or the higher level crops you can later buy that level at the grocerie store. And the RPG elements- oh god. Like i can't even start on how huge the story is. Not only are the characters written extremely well, with new dialouge, mini-events and new lines every day, morning, day and evening- they all have very own, very interesting backstorys, like the strong dragon knight girl, who inherited the position from her father after he died, that is actually afraid of ghosts or the girl you rescued in a quest that can actually see ghosts and has one following her around because that ghost is the only conection she still has to her parents.
Then there is the evil Empire next door that manipulates people into sabotaging everything, that needs to be stopped, the spirit realm, rune para- which is the actual endgame dungeon and so on- HECK YOU CAN EVEN GROW YOUR OWN DUNGEONS!...and weapons, like... wow. As if smithing with rarity and level statistics for every matirial would not be enough.
Rune factory is really the underdog here, i would have liked to see a bit more around here instead of harvest moon, which basically is getting up, watering crops, running around town, watering crops, getting to bed again and repeat. In fact, rune factory 4 has been so good, i can only go back to the harvest moon titles i REALLY liked because they pale in comparison.
Stardew valley basically seems like a better harvest moon but extremely close to rune factory at the same time. And honestly- i really want a good farming game like that and i think stardew valley might be just that. A nice relaxing mix between harvest moon and rune factory with a lot to do, characters to meet and hopefully not "do this a thousand times- wow you have beaten the game".
I can't wait to get my hands on it honestly. And as a game-developer in progress i really look up to concerned ape for doing this all by himself, even though i have not even played the game.
Oh and don't get me wrong- i REALLY like ALL the games i just talked about. Rune factory 4 is just my favourite right now but who knows- stardew valley might take that place.
The ability to use the mouse really makes some things more flexible than only being able to work directly in front of you for example.
Compared to Harvest Moon there's the combat element that is a major difference.
Since Harvest Moon (and Animal Crossing for that matter) don't really do that part.
All in all the general concept of gameplay is the same in all though.
You come into possession of a run-down property, you start doing jobs, growing crops and otherwise acquiring wealth and items. You make friendships with the locals and forge relationships with people if you so choose.
All the while you expand your property and perform daily tasks.
Occasionally special events occur like a harvest festival or whatnot. People have birthdays.
You get to collect a bunch of collectibles and there generally is some form of underlying story or plot that provides additional motivation to do stuff.
The best (and worst) thing about the concept is that you're essentially just performing mindless menial labour for most of the time. Its not highly complex and yet you have a constant sense of accomplishment as you build things, forge relationships, complete tasks and grow stuff.

There's a very good reason for youtubers to get early access to games.
Publicity, millions of people watch youtubers play various games, and what happens when a popular youtuber plays a game that looks to be fun? It's gonna sell a lot better, just for giving away one key to someone, that is a very good reason to do so.
But the JELLY! It is eating me! Changing me! I am slowly becoming 100% jelly, even though i tried to ignore it!
And people like yourself is why it's a good idea to give keys to youtubers, people that hype the game. :P

Giving keys to streamers is how they do it though, so get over it. Not trying to sound rude but- are you jealous you cant get a free game.. or what?
It's how gaming works these days.. companies (especially new ones) give out tons of Steam keys to streamers and youtubers to help promote the game. I don't agree with the concept completely- especially since many big name streamers/youtubers get so much free stuff because they are "internet famous" and thats it. It's really a bribe in a way- because generally most people that get a key for free will review it positively, play the game a few hours then move on to the next game.
And rob, that bit at the end of your post is pretty much exactly the thing that bothers me. I do not like that system. I am extremely uninterested in this though, it is not my thread, and a thread ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about that would be locked almost certainly.
Unfortunately Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons* isn't really doing that anymore either. Back to Nature and FoMT had this, right? Around that same period, I know A Wonderful Life didn't have it and every game I have played after that date did not either. I really like the concept of it, personally.
Another big difference is that ConcernedApe is inclined towards post-launch content updates, along with possible modability and planned multiplayer. Concerning mods, he has mentioned on twitter that he didn't build the game with them in mind but that simple things should be possible. Story of Seasons and HM:A New Beginning have multiplayer but it's a lot more limited/generally than what is planned.
Gifting is also different. In HM, you can generally gift people twice a day. It takes up a lot of time, honestly.
You don't really have things like the community centre at all from what I remember. Rune Factory is where dungeons are at, but even then they are a bit different from this. Those games are much more fantasy oriented and have battle magic and beast taming. At times in RF the farming aspect seems a bit lost of muddled up.

*Story of Seasons is what traditional Harvest Moon games will be going as now. Harvest Moon is the localised title presented by Natsume, who are no longer doing it but held the rights. So a HM game released after New Beginning is put out by Natsume, not Marvelous (who makes the original series).Just in case that detail comes up for you, mikeweem :) If someone mentions BokuMono games in comparison, that is the Japanese abbreviation for the series
Thankfuly most of the Harvest Moonesque games today allow that option.
Both Natsume's HM and Marvelous SoS are still way behind the times, sadly.
