Yeah, I'm going to push on with it. As painful as it is, I have fun with the 25% profit margin ;)
The thing that really hurts with this this Tiny Farm is the (apparent) loss of the Greenhouse. The Pantry still claims to unlock the Greenhouse so... I dunno, I'm not going to get my hopes up, but it would be nice if it was somehow accessible after I complete the Pantry.
I can't see Grandpa's Shrine so ... maybe there's something I'm missing. Also, my dog runs around in areas that I can't access. So who knows?
(I'm also going to have to make a decision on whether or not to hold back some Strawberries for seeding. One of the main things I use the Greenhouse for is to make sure I have enough Strawberry seeds to plant outside on Spring 1 of Year 2. I'm going to miss having that available).
Found an Orange on the Traveling Cart. It was an excruciating 400 gold, the day before the Egg Festival, but ... I have the Artisanal bundle, and an Orange will let me cover one of the six things I need, so ... I bought it. Even with the purchase of an Orange, I was able to buy 57 Strawberries (and plant them all before bed). No speed-grow, but .. c'est la vie.
Regardless, 57 Strawberries, in the ground and growing. And I've got 3 spots left where the Parsnips were, and the six spots where the Kale is, so ... I'll probably turn that into potatoes.
And then stop, since that's about as much as I want to be watering by hand.

Annnnnd I've titled this "Strawberry Spring" which is the name of a deeply disturbing Stephen King story, whereas what I meant to refer to was Strawberry Moon, from Moonstick: Seasons of the Sioux (a children's book about the 13 season Sioux lunar calender).

And ... I could have sworn I edited this, but I guess I hit "cancel" instead of "save changes".
Down to floor 25 in the mines, so ... 15 floors to go for Sprinklers. Doubt I'll alter the Spring plots, but the Summer ones will probably be arranged with Sprinklers in mind (even if I don't have enough to cover everything right away).
If the greenhouse is not available, the advantage of finishing the greenhouse bundle will be access to garden pots. Those can be put inside "all farm buildings, The Cave, The Tunnel, The Sewers, the Mutant Bug Lair, the Witch's Swamp, the entrances to The Mines and Skull Cavern, and villagers' homes" and grow plants year round just like the greenhouse. The difference of course being that you can't grow trees, and there's no water source. But with an upgraded watering can you can get a lot covered. I was surprised how much I could fit inside the mine entrance, with the dwarf area unblocked, and maybe even the quarry cave. And the mountain lake is close, so watering wasn't a hardship.
Garden pots can also be used outdoors, but only to grow crops of the current season.
You cannot plant ancient seeds into a garden pot, however.
I decided where to put the coop when I'm ready to buy it, so I left a 3x6 space right beside the coffee plant and next to the house for it. I have the cash to build it now (from the sale of those potatoes I just harvested) but I need to get the wood and stone first. I just used all my wood and stone to make five preserve jars for processing the potatoes.
I sold the starred ones to afford the parsnip and cauliflower seeds I just planted around the edges. I figure that hand watering them for a little while won't be so bad, and I need to get ahead if I'm going to get the starred ones I need for the CC.
Harvesting the potatoes took me from level one farming all the way up to level four overnight! That's how I just got the preserve jar recipe.
The next morning after this picture was taken I found that my coffee plant had matured. I'm sad now that I didn't remember to leave space to replant more coffee. I have to decide whether to sacrifice some other plants for it.
Also, Demetrius just showed up and offered me a cave! I'm torn whether to choose mushrooms or fruit. Usually mushrooms is my obvious choice, because they produce so much more than the fruit. But the open floor space of the fruit cave is valuable in a Tiny Farm, and can be filled with garden pots. Also, I can find mushrooms elsewhere but getting tree fruit is going to be very very difficult. So I guess Bat Cave wins!
Managed to finish the Crab pot bundle, so now I've got three crab pots in the tiny TINY little pond I have. Eventually I'll probably move those off to the river or the coast. The first crop of Cauliflower came in (six, plus one more from a Mixed Seed). I sold 5, held back two (including one Gold Star one for the Luau), I was thinking Luau and Jodi's quest, and I completely forgot I needed one for the Spring crops bundle as well. Fortunately, I got the extra 9 Cauliflowers from Gunther, and those should still be ready before the end of Spring.
Planted Potatoes in the spots I harvested the Cauliflowers from.
Got Leah, Haley and Caroline (and Vincent) all up to 2 hearts. I'll have to go visit Caroline on a Sunny day. I don't think I'll manage to get Leah or Haley to 4 hearts before the Spring Dance though, so I probably won't bother to go. I think ... I could give each of them 2 more gifts before the Dance ... probably the most efficient thing would be to give Leah Salads, but that would require buying them from Gus, which ... is a bit problematic on a 25% run. I can technically afford it ... but ... it seems a bit frivolous.
(And there's Caroline casually mentioning that she's just going to get takeout from Gus, as if the prices at the Stardrop Saloon are trivial! I rage at the Capitalistic Success of others!! Especially that greedy puckletard Pierre, who marks up *MY* produce outrageously, AND takes credit for it!!!)
(Oh ... and while we're on the topic, Gus? Gus sells Zucchini Fritters! With a Spicy Marinara! Where the heck is he getting Zucchini?!?! *I* want Zucchini! But no, no... all I get is Eggplant!).
And ... alas ... Disaster has struck.
I managed to unlock the Bulletin Board:
I'm doomed.
The Fodder bundle isn't too bad, I can usually manage an Apple tree without much trouble, the question for THIS run though, is space.
The Forager's bundle isn't too bad either, although it'll probably take most of my Salmonberries to finish it off.
The Dye bundle is a disaster. It'll require a Red Mushroom (which I have), a Sea Urchin (which I have), a Starfruit (which I don't have), a Cactus Fruit (which I don't have), A blueberry (which I don't have but will by Summer), and a Red Cabbage (which I don't have).
The Enchanter's bundle is a disaster. Oak Resin, Wine, Pomegranate and a Rabbit's Foot.
The Home Cook's bundle is a disaster. 10 Eggs, 10 Milk, 100 Wheat flour.
I'm already trying to figure out if I can manage a Peach Tree in time to get at least one Peach by the end of Summer, an Apple Tree for the Fodder Bundle (and the Artisan bundle), and I'll also need a Pomegranate. All told that's an estimated 3.725k at Pierre's. Far worse is the space requirement. Three fruit trees ... 9 spaces each.
I'll eventually get one Starfruit from Gunther. If I seed that, I might be able to parley it up into several Starfruit (enough for the Grange Festival, Kent's quest and the Dye Bundle), but if I can't manage that ... I need to unlock the Bus. Which is functionally 170K in a 25% Margin run. (Hardly impossible of course, but still challenging). Then there's the Cactus Fruit and the Cabbage. I've probably just got to wait on those.
The Enchanter's bundle? Oak Resin: Well, I'm going to be collecting that regardless, so that's fine. Wine: Well, I'm going to make Kegs regardless, so that's fine too. The Pomegranate, as mentioned, will require both cash (1.5k) and worse, SPACE. The Rabbit's Foot? (arrrrghh!) For that, I either need the Deluxe Coop, or I need to get lucky on the Traveling Cart.
As we've discussed, having Animals in this run (at 25% profit margin) means BUYING a lot of Hay. Again, building prices aren't discounted, so functionally, the Coop would be 130k Not including materials or animals. And the Coop is 6x3, eating up 18 spots.
The Home Cook's bundle? That's even worse than the Encanter's or the Dye ones. 10 Eggs (any size). So we're back to a Coop again. 10 Milk (any size). Now I need a Barn, and at least one cow. Even a basic Barn will need 7x4 (and functionally 24k (not including materials), plus the cost of the Animals).
I was intending to build a Barn, but ... I was going to fill it with Kegs. I really was hoping to avoid Animals in this run.
And last of all ... 100 flour. If I buy it, that's functionally 20k. If I build the Mill, I lose more SPACE (only 4x2 this time, but ... still ...). And for the Mill, I'll need 4 Cloth. (I mean ... on a Beach farm it's "What? The Mill will take how much space? Why would I care? Stick it anywhere" but on the Tiny Farm, it's more of a "What!! You want HOW much of my precious real estate!?!!?")
Soo... suddenly, my Tiny Farm(tm) is FILLED TO THE BRIM, with Expensive buildings that'll lose MONEY.
So like I say ... doomed.
Yeah, space is the big deal. Maybe the problem is that you're thinking too fast. In a normal playthrough you can accomplish all of this easily in a year or two. But in this playthrough maybe it's important to think longer term. Maybe you should focus on just the greenhouse bundle first, get those garden pots, and expand your farm by filling up other public spaces. Then ALL the spaces on your farm can be used to focus on the buildings you must have.
What bundles/items do you need for the Pantry?
Spring Crops Bundle (already done)
Summer Crops Bundle
Fall Crops Bundle
Quality Crops Bundle (Cauliflower, Mellon, Pumpkin, Corn) (three of four)
Garden Bundle (Tulip, Blue Jazz, Summer Spangle, Sunflower, Fairy Rose) (four of five)
Artisan Bundle (Truffle Oil, Cloth, Goat Cheese, Cheese, Honey, Jelly, Apple, Apricot, Orange, Peach, Pomegranate, Cherry) (six of twelve)
I was going to do Mellon, Pumpkin and Corn for the Quality Crops
I already have the Tulip and the Blue Jazz, I was going to use the Summer Spangle and the Fairy Rose for the other two.
I have an Orange. Jelly and Honey are pretty easy. I was going to grow an Apple tree regardless, so that's four. The other two ... are somewhat more problematic. Dunno if I can do a Peach tree in time during Year One. I can probably manage a Pomegranate as well as an Apple (Financially it should be doable, space is more the issue).
I think the three fruit trees will fit on the far left side.
I can move the Shipping bin ... a Barn could go in the upper right ... might have to cut down those bushes though.
Mmm... no clue how I'm going to squeeze a Coop in there though. Not and still have ANY space for crops.
Hmm... not sure about a Silo, I might be able to get away without one, although it would mean manually reloading the food bins.
After you technically don't need your land for crops anymore, only then would I say you should put in animals. Not having crops planted will give you some room to plant grass, on feeding station rods. That will vastly increase the value of the eggs and milk, not having to buy every day's hay, not to mention increasing their happiness and therefore the size/quality of their products.
It might mean not putting animals on your land until next spring, but on such a tiny farm there might not be another way to fit it all, on a reduced profit challenge.
At least, that's the way I would approach it.
After the greenhouse bundle is complete, you will then have access to the garden pots which will totally replace your need for farmland for crops from then on. Except maybe if you need to grow ancient fruits. But just that one crop shouldn't be too hard.
I love picking berries! Especially on the Tiny Farm it feels important to maximize how many things I can gather. I might not be able to grow enough crops to keep my preserve jars full all the time, and salmonberry jelly will be a great option for those times. Plus of course they make great gifts for Robin, Demetrius, Linus, Pam, Shane, and Jodi. Not to mention that eleven berries will fill up the hunger bar completely. So I feel like it's really worth it to spend these days gathering berries, and chopping trees in the meanwhile. It's a good time to get ahead on wood supplies.
Yeah, that's probably a better approach than trying to do it all at once.
Please join us! I'd love to see what you do with the challenge! There are several farm options you can choose to map out your own tiny farm, or you can try the mod like Nakos!
There's Cute Beach Farm: https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/6300
There's Small Wild Farm: https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/6296#
There's Small Farm: https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/1518
And there's Tiny Garden Farm: https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/4635?tab=description
I think ... visually, Tiny Garden Farm is probably the nicest.
All of them would be easier than the Tiny Farm though :P
I've managed to make it down to floor 40 in the Mines, so I can get Iron Ore now. That all highlights how weak my starter Pick is. Can't afford to upgrade that this season though.
Got Fishing up to level 3, and managed to catch a Gold Star Shad on a rainy day, so that's one Quality Fish taken care of (really though that one is the easiest).
DIdn't manage to get Haley or Leah up beyond 2 hearts and the Dance is tomorrow, so ... I'm going to skip it and go mining instead. I definitely need more Iron.
I've got 4 Tappers up at the Bus Stop.
Got Farming up to level five and took Tiller, although ... it might have been better to take Rancher, that might have made animals more of a break-even prospect. But ultimately, I want Artisan. I did some math and I should make 72 gold on Gold Star Mayo (without Artisan) and 100 gold with Artisan, so ... yes, mature, happy chickens should be profitable, but it's still a looooooooong payoff horizon.
Cheese would be better, Gold Star Cheese would be 120 gold each.
