Keeping safe while modding? (MAC)

Hello! :)

I’ve just started dipping my toes into the modding community as I’ve seen all that the vanilla game has to offer, and I’d like to spice things up a bit- but I do tend to get worried about viruses and malware, so I can get a bit stingy with downloads.

I’ve used only Nexusmods before and I’m aware that it virus scans, but i’ve also heard that it’s not infallible. Is there anything recommended to use alongside it to stay safe? I’m on Mac.

I use Malwarebytes, but a friend of mine told me that it only handles half of the issues.

You are good to go. If you 100% don't want any harmful software on your PC then don't download and use any mods at all. Sorry, but you have to risk it. I've never encountered any harmful code on Nexus. Been using it for ages. Distributing harmful code via mods is pretty frowned upon the modding scene anyway. Since mods are build upon the community spririt and providing more content often for free it makes no sense for even trolls to "crap" on the table. Even before using nexus I have not run into any dangerous mods. Just don't download mods from crummy websites.

Nexus Mods is "pretty safe". Given who and what they are, it's in the Admin's best interests to keep the site clean. That doesn't protect you from day-zero issues, but nothing really does.

Also, having a Mac means you're a lower value target than PC users, so that helps too.

My suggestion: Get a portable remote drive and set up Time Machine, and make regular backups. (You can make them as frequently as you like). That way you'll have a way to revert any problems.
