Advices to master fighting
A lot of people say that this game is too easy when it comes to fighting. "Just grab the galaxy hammer and use the secondary attack on everything". To that, my answer is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. So, help me to understand what am I doing wrong.

When I see videos of people playing, they kill everything before even getting close, in one or two strikes. It feels like magic to me. I am level 9 in fighting (it's taking forever to reach 10) and I have the galaxy hammer. I use two iridium rings to improve my attack in 20%.

The thing is, nobody freaking dies here. The tiger slimes take forever to kill and they can reach me so fast. I keep clicking attack but the hammer is too slow and the secondary attack, the ground shake, takes too much time to recharge without the level 10 upgrade. I am surviving (never died) by using as many blackberries as I can but it's getting tiresome. I can't get a dinosaur egg because I am destroyed, I can't get to the forge in ginger island because the enemies overwhelm me so fast.

So what am I doing wrong? Can I accelerate the secondary attack in some other way, improve my attack? There must be something because everyone seems to be doing so much better than me...

Hammers are slow. Swords swing faster and have a "block" secondary that may be useful for you. Most players prefer using swords.

Seriously? That's not what I have been said... well... everywhere else...

Then do what those people told you, if that's the advice you want to follow.

I personally find all three of the galaxy weapons to be good to have around. None of them can match the dagger in single target damage. The hammer is clearly amazing at clearing groups. And the sword has a defensive function and a well rounded attack.

Hammer is definitely the best at attacking enemies underneath you. The sword is great for generally having out. and the dagger is a great tool when you need to just dish out damage to a thick target.

Also, drinking coffee like an addict is really helpful

*shrug* There are reasons why sword is the default weapon in SDV but its up to you what you want to use.

This. Coffee is freaking amazing. It changes the combat completely. Now I can evade enemies and counter attack with crazy strong strikes and aoe with the hammer.

You can keep the "use the sword" stuff. The sword is slightly faster but now that I reached the floor 10 of the volcano and increased the speed of the hammer, that's not a problem. Also, the defense stance is a little stupid in a game where you can regenerate so easily. Now I suppose that once I get to level 10 and I get the ability to reduce by half the aoe attack of the hammer, I think this may get interesting.

I am glad to get more advices, but I seriously think that coffee is the thing. I reviewed some of the videos of the pros I was looking at and I noticed they were actually using coffee, they just didn't mention it. The triple expresso is freaking amazing. I need to make more of that stuff.

People who are fast with the hammer are using animation cancelling. It's an exploit that has to do with combining certain keystrokes so there is no delay in actions.

I consider it a cheat because the slowness of the hammer is part of the balance of how strong the weapon is. But exploits like that are done so commonly that most people just assume that's the way the game is played.

You can look up videos about animation cancelling if you want to learn the skill. It's just like clay farming, as far as common/popular exploits are concerned. All the major Stardew gamers with large followings do it, so that influences people to legitimize it in their heads as normal. I'm just against it because I like the balance of the vanilla game without exploits, and it annoys me that some folks might label me as a 'bad' player just because I don't achieve what they can achieve using such exploits.

But that's just my rant, and tbh I have nothing against you or anyone else for playing the game however it is fun for you. I'm sure you can learn all the tricks if you want to. It's just not easy to teach them in print as it is in video.

That's actually great, I'll look at it.

Combat means using whatever means you have to defeat an enemy. If I am using the resources allowed by the creator, accidental or not, I don't feel it's cheating. More like an advanced technique.

Ok, if someone is still interested, the cancelling attack doesn't even look like cancelling. I don't know if it's a glitch but it honestly looks legit and it seems to have been for years, so maybe it's even intended. This is how it works:

Get the hammer (probably any hammer will do), then press right click (secondary attack) and almost at the same time but a fraction of second later, press left click (main attack button). It feels like the characters hits the ground first and then, when you press left click, he makes the weapon bounce on the ground two or three times, I am not sure. The effect is similar to making the ground attack with two or three times the damage. It's actually pretty good. It doesn't feel like it breaks the game completely since the character will keep receiving damage in a lot of situations, and you still have to time it a little, but combined with the triple expresso, I think this is it.

You can try to increase the ability to use the secondary attack faster, with the level 10 skill and the spell from the volcano and I think this way you get as strong as you can be in stardew valley.
It's not the Galaxy weapons that they're one-shotting monsters with, it's the Infinity weapons (plus forging plus enchantments), plus fused rings (you can fuse rings in the forge so you have four rings equipped).

Hope this helps! Good luck! :simplepinkheart:

Thanks a lot! I can't combine two identical rings, right? I tried but maybe I didn't do it right? I tried to combine two iridium rings but apparently the game wants me to get different abilities instead of a very strong one.

No problem! I don't think you can combine two of the same rings together, but you can combine like...

The iridium band (+10atk) + Ruby ring (+10atk) to get total +20atk
And for your second ring, you can use another iridum band and combine it with another ruby.

But you don't need two Iridium bands and two Ruby rings to OHKO.
+20 or +30atk on the rings should be enough. I think I used slime as one of my rings.

Thanks a lot, Alice! Great advices :D, I am on it. Wish the days were longer, as of recently I am feeling a little bit stressed.

If you're having trouble dealing with slimes, remember that you can obtain a slime charmer ring for killing 1,000 slimes in the mines and receiving it as a reward from Gil. Wearing it prevents all damage against slimes regardless of colour, including tiger slimes. While it doesn't make killing them any faster, it definitely will make things a lot easier. :greenslime:

Thank you. I am trying to get the burglar ring but in the process I kill every slime I can.
