Why don't you want to use SMAPI. SDV's modding scene is built around it. And you won't be able to do much modding without it, except replacing textures.
No, because if you look at the game files these files end with .xnb. You need to use XNBcli to merge the json and png file into one xnb file so that you can replace the xnb file in your game -> content folder.

SMAPI is easy to set up and use. No frills or anything like that.
Even so, some replacement mods need a workaround for the base game file, and SMAPI, along with a few mods, enable the ability to change portrait.
Let just said replacing base game with your "modded pngs" is a worse idea than SMAPI way.
