installing mods?
Installing mods?
How do I install mods, without using any modloader or 3rd party sw? I downloaded the following mod: "Replace Maru and Demetrius" from https://basedmods.eth.limo/browse/

and I got two folders with subfolders, containing two .json each and 3 .png each
shouldn't be more advanced than that I just extract the folders and files to the correct directory?

Why don't you want to use SMAPI. SDV's modding scene is built around it. And you won't be able to do much modding without it, except replacing textures.

No, because if you look at the game files these files end with .xnb. You need to use XNBcli to merge the json and png file into one xnb file so that you can replace the xnb file in your game -> content folder.

I mean if I dont have a choice I guess, but sounds too me like such an easy mod (literally just a .png replacer) shouldnt need a third party application, which is just annoying and intrusive

The game files aren't made up off png files. The json file belongs to the png files. It contains information that the "texture" needs to work in the game, so it's not that easy.

SMAPI is easy to set up and use. No frills or anything like that.

Use SMAPI. To give you a little more context, the man behind making SMAPI and a lot of popular mods is also behind a lot of the development of 1.6 coming soon. He's literally working a longside the creator of the game.

Just use SMAPI, there're no kind of privacy disturbing or something like that.

Even so, some replacement mods need a workaround for the base game file, and SMAPI, along with a few mods, enable the ability to change portrait.

Let just said replacing base game with your "modded pngs" is a worse idea than SMAPI way.
