Seaweed, and I am attempting something insane

Let's call it a challenge run. Y'know how the first cast with your fishing rod is always a winner? I want to catch a legendary fish with my first cast.

To do this, I need to build up fishing experience to the point that I hit level 10 without fishing. Catching things in the crab pots can contribute to this, as can collecting resources from fish ponds, but that's about it for sources of fishing experience that I can use for this.

To make a fish pond, I need seaweed, which has a chance to show up on the beach each day (in my current run, this has not yet happened, am halfway through autumn). To get crab pots, it's just a matter of collecting the right shellfish and turning them in to the (not really a spoiler, but I'd genuinely hate to ruin a surprise for anyone, even one that happens so early in the game) thing.

But arming those crab pots requires bait, and until I reach fishing level 1, I can't make it and Willy will not well me any. So I have been relying on the travelling trader, who has brought me regular bait once, and a magnet once, both of which i have used in a crab pot. Yes, the bait was overpriced.

Does anyone know of a possible source for bait or seaweed that I have missed? I poke the trash cans daily when i check the beach for seaweed, because I think it's int he trash drop table, but no luck yet.

The only other sources I can think of are pretty long-game methods.

Wild bait works in crab pots, too, so you could befriend Linus to get the recipe and make that for a while if you're ok farming the ingredients.

Seaweed is found in the Dangerous Mines on the early levels, so I guess it would be possible for you to do the Joja route (after getting your crab pot bundle from CC) by making money through non-fishing things, then unlock Ginger Island, then unlock Qi's Walnut room, and then do the Dangerous Mines lol. You could then also buy magic bait from Qi and also find wild bait from artifact spots on Ginger Island.

That's a good point about the wild bait. As for the Joja route, I did that once for the achievement and set that run aside, as it felt like playing the game wrong.

Befriend Linus. A 4 hearts, he'll give you his special bait recipe. It's still going to be more expensive than regular bait (In terms of resources), but it should work (as far as I know).

Yeah, the Beach and the Beach Farm would be the two places where I see it wash up.

yeah the beach farm is what I would have suggested for this. it does wash up both on the seashore ocean particularly the right side over the bridge and yeah.

maybe NPC walk over it and destroy it on the right but I don't see as many foragables on the right.

as your run isn't doing anything else I'd recommend restarting on the beach farm. from what I can tell those are the two sources available to you, you can get it from fishing, particularly in the night market 41% chance.

the OTHER option you could do, is get the crab pot bundle done in the community center, and use those 3 crab pots to get your fishing to level 3, and then buy like 100 crab pots and get your fishing to 10 that way.

crab pot bundle, can also be done with beach forage + a crab from the drops in the mines from the rock monsters that drop them.

3 crab pots at 15 XP a day would take 51 days to reach fishing 3.

then 100 crab pots would take 29 days to reach fishing 10. though I suppose we could eat fishing +4 food to do it much sooner.

Just wanna say good luck on this run. I love fishing in stardew. . .I've hit level 10 before Spring Year 1 ended before (and come close many other times). . .this is not something I would have the patience to do.

Also. . .doesn't it like, always default to a sunfish? (i.e. being able to fish a sunfish on the ocean on first cast?).

ok, so catching a crab pot fish counts as your first fish. might also be tutorial fish like they explained in the code. fish ponds have not been tested.

have item exploits been patched? like if I go to marnie and buy a chicken and name it [152] will I still get a seaweed?

Not in ocean- usually herring or sardine first catch.

I am absolutely certain I have caught a sunfish in the ocean before. I was very confused.
