Cannot plant fruit tree sapling?
I've planted all my fruit trees neatly in a big square, with 2 empty spaces inbetween the fruit trees horizontally, and 4 empty spaces vertically (so I can see the trunk of each tree without the lower trees blocking the view).

Thing is, lightning struck one tree in the middle, and there's only a stump left. A stump that will not grow. I thought it would but it's been 2 seasons now, and it's still the same stump.

So I cut it down, and wanted to plant a new fruit tree. The game doesn't let me. At first I thought there was something blocking the 8 squares around it, but they are all empty. No grass, weeds, acorns, rocks or wood, and nothing hoe'd either. Strangely, I don't get an error message "too close to other trees" either in that exact spot. The 8 surrounding spots do, but the spot where the old tree has been, does not. Yet I can't place a sapling there.

Help?

Have you tried hoe-ing that one spot, then whacking it with a pickaxe to try to "reset" it?

I dont get it either, I planted fruit trees in late fall, they have 2 squares adjacently and none vertically, since it's a row, and they won't grow, while they should in winter, fro mwhat I have read. The game only states that 8 surrounding squares have to be empty, so I have more space than the tree actually needs.

Huh?

In order to grow, each fruit tree needs this:

OOO OXO OOO

So if you want a row of them, it should look like this:
OOOOOOOOOOOO OXOOXOOXOOXO OOOOOOOOOOOO
If you want a block of them, it should look like this:
OOOOOO OXOOXO OOOOOO OOOOOO OXOOXO OOOOOO

I just tried hoe'ing it, then reset it with the pickaxe. No luck. Hoe'ing all 8 surrounding spots then pickaxing them didn't work either.

Another weird thing, the hoe doesn't till that spot where the stump has been, it stays untilled soil. Hitting it with the axe doesn't produce a "hitting" sound either.

I'm starting to think this is some kind of bug.

It does sound bug-ish.

You might try enabling the beta patch to see if that helps, but I wouldn't have lofty expectations... the beta patch notes are that it prevents fruit trees from being destroyed by lightning in the first place, rather than fixing the effects of them being destroyed by lightning.

EDIT: I counted again, and it was 3 empty spaces vertically inbetween the trees, not 4. Sorry about that.

I just tried something drastic. One of my guesses was that maybe the canopy of the other trees interfered, I chopped down the trees that were next to them (only horizontically), and tried planting new saplings. Planting the others worked, but again not that spot.

Now, I really do think it's a bug, caused by the lightning striking the tree. One fruit tree is not such a big loss at this point in my game, but it just looks bad, with a big hole in the middle of my orchard.

And I just remembered that another non-fruit tree had been struck by lightning. It was in the far lower left of my farm, so I didn't pay any attention to it, but if this lightning happens a lot, I might get a lot of unusable land.

It is a bug, I have 2 trees stuck that way now.
