I agree that Sebastian's popularity confuses me, but I'm also perpetually confused by how Abigail is as popular as she is, too, so what do I know?
(I like Harvey, but I wouldn't call him a wealth of personality. Probably because he most closely reminds me of, well, me. And I wouldn't call myself a wealth of personality, either.)
You say you see a bunch of boring, flat characters? I say you haven't delved into their plotlines, and are taking their 0-2 heart dialogue on the surface, running with it, and casting a wide net of judgement based on that alone. Even in real life, what you get from a person you've just barely met and know nothing about is a 2-dimensional mask. It takes work to start unlocking those more complicated layers.
*SPOILERS*
Alex apologizes for acting like a dumb jock at somewhere around 4-6 hearts, and admits he's been using it as a defense mechanism because he's self-conscious about his intelligence level being high enough to get anywhere in his life (and he also admits he's probably not cut out for pro sports). It's something he turned to because he had an abusive, alcoholic father who constantly told him he'd never amount to anything, and he clung to the sports concept like a life preserver. He starts moving on from it at as an identity focal point from then on. That's just one example.
The "emo kid" that keeps griping about country life and how he can't wait to abandon his family and move to the big city with his motorcycle? He's more than willing to settle down with you and embrace farm life in full, as long as he's given a loving person in his life that he doesn't have to constantly feel like a second-class sibling to (he's got issues with Maru being the "favorite.") There's another.
I haven't gotten very far with Sam or Elliot, but I have to imagine they evolve in similar ways once you start working at their heart levels. Sam, at least, has started talking about his war veteran father, how he worries whether or not he's going to be riddled full of bullets before he comes home, and demonstrating a genuine protective side over his little brother, Vincent, at 4 hearts. You're not working hard enough to get to know the characters. You're not MEANT to get anything but a flat, 2-dimensional character for ANY villager (weddable or not) if you aren't working those heart levels up and don't do the gameplay effort of befriending them first, my friend.
.... that all said, the only bachelor I found genuinely unappealing (I hate to say it) is the sensitive doctor, Harvey. That mustache is LOATHESOME. I hate it. It's gotta go. I know it's shallow, and they're a bunch of pixelated sprites, but, hey, I can extrapolate a generic "real person" appearance from those pixels in my imagination, and Harvey's not remotely attractive, haha.
Edit: Vincent is funny!!
I feel like the most boring female bachelorette is the most popular anyway. (Penny. *Prepares to be attacked*).
I pretty much agree with Lurlex, you have to see their heart events to really get more of their personalties than the ones you see on the surface of someone you just say hi to once in a while.
Yeah, I probably will enjoy them more as I get to know them. I didnt instantly have a favorite I wanted to pursue, like in most harvest moon type games Ive ever played, so I plan on making friends with all of them so I can decide.
Why cant they be mysterious without actively being unappealing? Its great that they become more appealing as you get to know them, but still.
Hah honestly Seb says so many things that are such a downer lol. But he pretty much lives in a house where his sister is doted on and he's kind of always second place. But after marrying him he's SOO much happier.
And I feel like Alex has the most growth. If/When I start a new game I will probably go with him next.
I think it's because ConcernedApe wanted them to be more like 'real' people than the characters in Harvest Moon (say what you will about them, but they were a zonky lot). Most of us hide our true selves behind a persona we put up for strangers, co-workers, neighbors, etc. Most of us don't do that by being a lone wolf or an enigmatic stranger -- we do it by putting on a fake emotional face and adopting an "I don't know you" flat personality; usually friendly on the surface, sometimes hostile, but never our true selves. We only open up to the ones in our lives that make the effort to get close.
There are mysterious people out there, sure, but what is mysterious? It's people that are quiet and never answer questions directly. Also, don't forget that "mysterious" only is generally applied to people that are blessed with the genes for physical attractiveness -- when a person has exactly the same personality type but hasn't been graced with the good looks, others usually describe them more along the lines of "shy" at best ... or all too often, "creepy." :-/
The bachelorettes are all at 10/10 hearts. And I mostly like them all. Except Abigail, whom I find mostly dull with a side order of distaste. And unlike the bachelors, there's no opportunity left for her to get better.
Also, I'm fond of Sebastian, and I don't like how complacent she is with just letting him wallow in her shadow.
Some might think I'm injecting too much real-life into the game world, but meh to you if you do ... these are RPGs. I'm playing the role, as the acronym goes, and having fun with it. :-p
I definitely haven't gotten to ten with her yet. Maybe I should just to see what you're alluding to, haha.
I didn't like the portraits in the game so I replaced them so now Dr. Harvery is more like Dr. Hottie (lol) but he honestly has NO personality outside of being a doctor. All I got was that he is scared of heights and he likes airplanes... No thanks ? :/
As for Sebastian, he needs therapy or something. I am not attracted in any way to someone who is constantly acting depressed. He never takes a step outside of the trope that was given to him.
Alex I hated from the beginning. I don't like people who act like they are better than everyone else. Stuck up and thinking their **** don't stank. Same thing goes for Haley. I really don't care that they start to grow out of it because the damage has already been done!
Sam is just childish.. Nothing really wrong with him per se but as an adult irl I really just don't connect with him.
As for the girls I really liked Leah for a bit but now I don't know if I want to marry her.... Abigail started to get really cute in just daily conversation and although I initially thought she was childish like Sam.... I find her at the top of my list as far as marriage candidates go. Then again I might marry Elliott.. He is definitely a cutie after changing his portrait and I think he is the most mature male and probably the one I most connect with.
Playing Harvest Moon games I'm used to being more interested in bachelorettes than bachelors.. I always felt like more time was spent on them and this game isn't any different. At least in this game I can be a female avatar :)
