How to get Hay in Winter?
I made a pretty big mistake...I didn't realize it was the last day of fall and didn't harvest what little grass was growing on my farm. (Not that it would have been sufficient for winter anyway, I couldn't get my grass to grow at ALL in the other seasons, do you have to water it or something??)

Marnie has just been aimlessly wandering around her house and not selling anything, so I can't get hay and my chickens are starving...can they die? How can I get hay? Any ways of getting around this?

Thanks.

You buy it from Marnie (or hope she gifts you some).

Marnie does not work on Mondays or Tuesdays, however.

1. They can not die
2. Yes, she has a habit of doing that. Try a Wednesday at 9am.

As for growing grass, make sure there is enough room for it to spread, make sure you are actually putting down a starter, and just leave it totally alone. Keep it out of reach of animals as well, as they will eat it.

If you don't mind no animal produce in the winter, feel free to starve them, because animals cannot die.
If you are one of those people however who are insistant on raising their heart levels for whatever reason, then marnie is your only other option. At 50 gold per piece however, it don't come cheap.

For some reason? Hearts is how you get better quality products from animals and increase their sell price.

Make sure in the coming year to save for a silo or two.

What are you talking about? You raise hearts in order to have better quality of items. It also raises the value of animals. Please, do some research before you post fake info.

Yes they can die, but only if you leave them outside and close the door so they can't go inside. At night there is a chance for an event of a wolf eating one of your animals.

Who would sell an animal for just 1/3rd more than buy price anyways? Do people even sell them? :P And wouldnt you usually make artisan goods out of the animal goods, which means quality is pointless?

From a large milk you can make a golden quality cheese which is worth more. Same with goat milk and large eggs.

Yes they do (I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one).
Got coop full of brown/white chickens (plus a rabbit and a duck) - and then sold one when I got a void egg, then another one when got dino, and 2 more when blue chicken become available. I'm going for variety. :D:
Also pigs - I sell them on Fall 28 in the end of the day and buy piglets on Winter 18. This way I don't have to feed them for 2.5 weeks and they would grow up and redy to dig truffles by Spring 1. Also they sell for something like 20k, 4k pure profit from each.

I had this issue cause I bought too many animals with 1 Silo. What I ended up doing was buying Hay when I could. But I started this problem on a Monday, Marnie was closed. SO I used 10 fiber to make a grass starter, it will instantly grow, then I cut it down with my scythe, I have the gold one from the cave/mine by the quarry.
I then started going into the mine to collect more fiber. Hope this helps in anyway.

Pro tip: If you get starter grass. You can get four fences and stack them around the grass starter(square looking and should be same sized as a tile). That way that grass starter cannot be eaten and it still grows.

This post is from 2016... Grass starters didn't exist back then... And this is also pretty bad advice... You're supposed to let grass starters grow, not cut them down right away. 1 tile of grass will eventually turn into 9, then 25, etc. You're supposed to cut it back, not completely mow it down. :P
