Actually, I think if it goes 2 days without water it will die, but 1 will be fine.

if you water the plants and afterwards trurn the watercan in, you won´t have any day without watering (next day they will watered by the rain and the day after that you already can get back your watercan)
And once full grown, crops need no daily water anymore and you can leave them "unpicked" all season. Hence, flower-honey.
Also check the calendar, because if there is an event the day after the rain you won't be able to pick up the tool because the shops are closed for the event.
