Can chickens only eat hay?
I went about my random routine of doing farm stuff when I went to pet my animals.
The cow was fine but both chickens were upset.
It said 1 of them was grumpy and the other was thin.
The entire area is FILLED with grass, the chicken's hay was empty though.

No, chicken also can eat grass, at least if they are allowed outside of their coop

I haven't closed their door. They were both outside when I checked them. (I even have a screenshot)
I'm not using any mods, so that shouldn't be an issue.

If you fail to open the door/let them outside before a certain point in the morning/day, and the hay-bench is empty, they can decide they haven't been fed "that day" and get grumpy/thin even if they then go outside to feed later the same day.

EDIT: even if hay bench wasn't entirely empty, maybe there wasn't enough for all chickens and thus only one or two get put into that state.

I don't know what triggers this, tho - if it's a set time or based on something else. Just tends to be mid-late morning, for me, for whatever reason.

I leave the door open. I stopped bothering to close it since I never saw a purpose to it. I know that there's supposed to be wolves or something, but I think the wolves only get the animals that are locked outside of the barn/coop.

I dunno, then. Could just be an intermittent glitch.

I find chickens tend to produce eggs a bit less consistently if I leave the door open all the time, but other than that, yeah, doesn't seem to harm them.

If you don't close the door at night they'll be upset.

Only one was upset, the other "looked thin".
Also, I check them everyday, only now did this happen (after I forget to fill up their hay)
