Tree planting (non fruit)
Hello!

I don't really understand how to plant trees, or, better, I think I understood it, but I'm not sure. Is it enough to plant the seeds (maple seed, acorn, and the last one I don't remember)? What are the spacing requirements? I noticed that some of my trees planted a few days ago has already started to grow, but some of them are still in the "seed" stage. For every seed, I left the 8 surroding spaces empty, in all cases, so I don't understand why some of the trees aren't growing.

Moreover, can I leave less space between seeds for non-fruit tree? I noticed that some trees that I did NOT plant (they were already there) are growing like this (O = tree)

The trees will grow into full trees if they are 1 space away from another tree so that is the minimum spaceing. (I mean they can't grow into a tree if they're right next to another tree but will if they're one or more spaces off.) I have planted a little tree orchard where I collect pine tar, maple syrupe, and oak resin. ^_^

Afaik for non-fruit trees that is really the correct placement just like you said:

But I'm not 100% sure, never tried it, but the wild ones sure grow like that, fruit ones on the other hand I'm sure needs an entire empty square.

The "wild" trees don't have the same requirement as the fruit ones. So you can, for example, plant the seed and immediately surround it with paths and it will still grow. Do note that the wild tree growth seems to be random. I planted wild trees in roughly half of my farm's area (so hundreds of trees) and some of them were fully grown in a matter of days. Others took a while longer.

Ok, so it wasn't a spacing problem but just that they grow randomly :)

Does the fruit tree grows randomly too? I'm just a broke farmer, those thousands of golds are too many to try it myself :D

I have planted a lot of non fruit trees one next to each other. Some grew, some are still seeds (more than a year after), even if there is plenty of space. The fruit trees grew normally, without issues.

Nop. At least on my end they seem to grow in a very predictable way. They will update their appearance once per week, so you know if they are growing or if something is wrong, and will be fully grown in 28 days if all goes to plan. Just keep checking them and removing any grass/rocks/branches/wild seeds that might spawn around them.

After I looked at my own tree placement drawings I got such and urge to go back to playing Dwarf Fortress...
