Two years is in a whole different solar system than 'late response' lol
However, many people consider themselves done without getting every achievement, or "finishing" their farm. They'll have a shed with only 30 kegs in it, their greenhouse crops aren't done growing yet, they haven't finished the museum or other collections. That's the endgame - when you're 90% done with the game, but still have extra stuff to do.
At that point, Pirate will help you finish the museum collection, same as the mining perk which gives double geodes. To the average player, they'd be useless or not amazing, but from my experience, most of the level 10 perks aren't amazing.
- Most people get combat or fishing as their last skill to level 10. If you're level 10 Farming, you're already making tons of money off your farm - the gem skill tree from mining, and the extra money from fishing is negligible. However, the gem tree can help with crystalariums, and the crab pot tree of fishing can provide decent food and quality fertilizer to help on your farm.
By the time you're at the endgame, fishing IS useless. The only real reason to do it is fun/boredom or for artifacts. I'll do a daily run of like 30 crab pots for the XP or food/fertilizer, but actual fishing? Even with the 50% price increase, I wouldn't bother wasting an entire day fishing for... I dunno, 6k? When I could be more efficient by planting more crops to make more money, or chopping down trees to build more kegs, or exploring the mines to make more tappers and crystalariums and crab pots... The entire point of many crafting and farming games is to fully automate the game by the end so you can spend it doing what YOU want - which could be fishing, or mining, or socializing.
TL;DR Stardew does have an endgame, and it can be reached by the end of year 1 for an experienced player. Fishing gets outclassed pretty rapidly by Farming and even Mining, due to automation. Why spend 12 hours fishing for 4k when I can spend 2 hours harvesting/planting crops and loading up my kegs for 50k? Adding the 50% from Angler and 40% from Artisan just makes it 6k for 12 hours of Fishing vs 70k for 2 hours of Farming. There's absolutely no contest, so Pirate is typically better for many players due to the chance of getting useful items from fishing, at a point when money is no longer the scarcest resource.
In my opinion, if someone is on the fence regarding these two options because they want to min-max the "best" choice, it can be boiled down to a simple question.
Do you care about collecting all artifacts?
-If so, I'd choose Pirate.
-If not, Angler.
