I usually fill it up myself, and I knew well in advance of even getting the pet that it was cosmetic. It just adds gameplay flavor for me -- it has about as much purpose as a new piece of furniture in your house, or desperately trying to collect all rarecrows even though they're harder to get and functionally no different from the scarecrows you can make ... and plenty of people seem to be spending time and money on those things.

I've been playing 86 hours and didnt even realise you could put water in the dog bowl lol. I've not even really been bothering with the pet, it only gets any love if its in my way

It actually DOES serve a small purpose. More behind spoilers: It gives you 1 point in Grandpa's evaluation if you get the message "(Pet name) loves you!" at least once. This can be the difference between a good and prefect evaluation if you haven't hit 1 million gold yet or finished the CC by the end of year 2.

Petting your animal also accomplishes this.

Yeah, but it's faster if you do both, which is helpful if you are rushing to get this done because you are like me and didn't know about this until halfway through your second year lol.
