How to place a storage chest?
Whenever I try to place a chest the mouse clicks do not work to place it.

Make sure you are RIGHT next to the spot you want to place it at. That is one of the stranger points of the build system that took me a bit to figure out.

Go north and to the right and visit Robin, also you may want to build a Silo first.

Also things only get destroyed ouside your farm is people walk over them, and maybe if theres an event that places something over it. I have a chest on the beach and in the mines entrance. But I tried placing a chest next to the bulletin board and it, er, didn't last long. Thankfully I hadn't stocked too many birthday presents in it...

Ask Robin to build you one. She lives northeast of town.

Also take care that the ground where you want the building to be built is free from anything first (this includes grass and other undergrowth) and that you have the necessary building materials for the building in your inventory

If you put a floor tile underneath your chest/machine/whatever, it won't get destroyed, (on your farm). You should also put lightning roads near these items to prevent lightning from taking them down.

I've had 8 chests around my house, (on tiles, a lightning rod near-ish them), and after 3 years, nothing has ever gotten destroyed.
