I died - how do I recover my tools?
I died in the mines and lost tools. How do I get new tools?

When you go to sleep and wake up next day, the tools should reappear close to your bed I think.
im not sure but you have to buy it again so the best thing is to quite the game without sleeping and play the entire day again.

What I *tried* to do was stop the .exe of the game immediately after dying. I did not let the sequence complete and, within 3 or so seconds I was able to kill the game process. When I re-loaded the game, it started on the day that I died (rather than the next day) and my inventory was still gutted.

Then it should be returned to you on the morning of the next day.

Iron axe? Why you bring it in the first place? The only tools you ever need, is a sword, and a pickaxe. Hoe can be usefull, but not really much. Oh well, if it axe, i think someone gonna return it soon. Copy your save data, in case there's no one send them back

Thanks for the info. So you only lose stuff you picked up in the mines?

I had my axe because I picked it up on the way to the mine. Where is Stardew's save data?

No, you can lose anything currently in your inventory, as far as I know. The game returning your tools only works for the base ones (axe, scythe, hoe, pickaxe, watering can) as something the dev added post launch as a "safety net" because people were losing their tools and there was no way to buy new ones, potentially breaking the game for them.

Schyte, watering can, and axe are essentials, the real problem are the hoe. How do you even start it if you can't dig a farmlands. Watering can can be replaced with sprinkler, schyte with sword. But you have to purchase hay directly, no more weeding. Axe can be complicated, while normal wood are purchasable, the hardwood aren't. So that break the game in some ways. Still, glad that dev add some "safety net" to this case

Welp, I just started the next day and I still don't have a replacement axe. What gives? Am I seriously going to have to restart after 35 hours of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ gameplay just for an axe?

If you are really sure you didn't misplace it (it's easy to forget stuff in one chest or another) since you say you restarted the day, then maybe the way you closed the game broke something.

Well, unless someone can give me some information I am going to not play this game for a year until I can forget the total anger over losing nearly 40 hours of gameplay.

That's why i said backup your save. Now replace that save with the old one. That way you'll lose a day, not much really.

I did save the backup. When I start the next day, I don't get my axe back.
