Yes, the first one you buy can only equip bait. I can't say if you should buy the iridium rod now without knowing more about yout plans and what you already have (besides your money) but it is worth it. Catching the legendaries is hard enough with the iridium rod and the right tackle, for example. Doing it without them would probably be insane. =P
Yes, the "red dot" ones are the legendaries. I caught all five with the "trap bobber", which is what people seem to recommend against them anyway. For more info on the different tackles: http://stardewvalleywiki.com/Tackle
