Seriously get them both.
Terraria is just an amazing game. I had TONS of fun with it. Alone and with friends. (Mostly alone, *insert foreveralone joke here*).
It's at heart a Metroidvania fused with Minecraft.
Stardew Valley is Harvest Moon on steroids.
Different types of games. Both 100% awesome.
And with the same style.
PS: Terraria can be relaxing... until the undead starts banging at the doors of your feeble hut in the night... while the red moon watchs... and eerie, dark things lurks in the darkness...
And then goes again to be relaxing... until everything is trying to kill you... and in the end, things got relaxing again... mostly.
HOW BOUT THEM CTHULU EYES THO.
Terraria isn't always relaxing, and Stardew really doesn't have much in the way of adventure besides going down a cave.
Either way, i doubt you'll be dissapointed with your purchase whichever you choose.
Terraria has the adventure and exploration and is relaxing... until something happens like a boss or a blood moon at lower levels, or you unlock hardmode by killing a specific boss in hell. Then it can actually be quite challenging and certain messages appearing on screen will fill your heart with dread early on.
Stardew Valley has some adventure but mostly is has the market on relaxing cornered. You pretty much won't find a more zen game (well, unless you are in the skull dungeon.)
My advice is get Stardew Valley now, since it will be a while before it starts showing up in steam sales and wait for a sale on Terraria while you play SV.
Anyway. From what I saw of Terr., it's not as relaxing as SDV, but has more "adventure". SDV's only "adventure" is in the mini-dungeon like lower mines and such, and said mines are optional to even do.
Stardew Valley is more like a laid-back "life simulation" game. You inherit an old family farm and try to do what you can to restore it to its former glory by planting crops, taking care of animals, meeting and socializing with the villagers, digging deep into a monster-infested mine, exploring the countryside, fishing, cooking, etc. There's a more natural sense of "progression" in that there are a ton of activities and only a limited amount of time during each season, and the emphasis is on living day-to-day.
If they both sound interesting, grab both. They're both good games that offer a ton of play time for the money, but they are radically different playstyles with little in common.
Terraria is an Adventure/Sandbox game that's all about exploration. The bosses are fun as hell to fight (except the final boss), the exploring is pretty fun, and the overall experience is good. If there's one thing bad I have to say about this game, it's that you have to grind to get better things (but most games does that anyways, so I wouldn't say that's too much of a deal.
Stardew Valley. Oh boy, this game is sucking away my existence in this world by the minute. This is a game you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the experience. The NPCs have very clear personalities, and pretty relatable as well. The fun element is definitely there, but it can get stale sometimes. There aren't a lot of adventuring, but I think that's what makes it relaxing.
TL;DR: Terraria is a game all about adventure and exploring. The game is fun, and you can easily pour 100+ hours into the game. Stardew Valley is a relaxing farming simulator, and time around you will just fly by when you are playing Stardew Valley. Pick whatever one you think suits you the most.
P.S: You can't really compare those too. It's like saying "Starbound is a clone of Minecraft because they are both made from pixel graphics"
Oh yeah, forgot that Stardew Valley is addicting as ballz. MEAP!
