Stardew Valley
Level 10 Farming, What to Choose?
I was wondering which is better, Artisan or Agriculturist? Is one better than the other or is it personal preference?

its 10% growth versus 50% profit on a lot of already profitable goods.

It'll be 10% if/when it's fixed, but right now, Agriculturist gives you a ~25-50% bonus to growth speed, depending on crop type.

As such, a case can be made for taking Agriculturist if one doesn't want to bother with artisan goods much and one doesn't mind editing the save file once the bug get fixed.

If you are going to get into kegs/preserves to any extent then go Artisan. Especially if you decide to exploit ancient fruit wine. The Agriculturalist perk only applies to the initial growth times of plants like ancient fruit/cranberries/blueberries, etc., not regrowth times of later harvests of those plants. So taking the Artisan perk would be better in that case.

If you are just going to grow crops and sell them, then Agriculturalist provides some benefit. It appears you'll currently be able to get the growth time of deluxe speed-gro without using it (so you can use Quality Fertilizer instead and still get about the same growth times). As Elegant Caveman mentioned, Agriculturalist appears to be bugged and could be nerfed in the future.

I went Agriculturalist and the main thing now is that I never know exactly when the harvest times will be. The days on the seed packets no longer apply. I have to take notes and then predict how the various crops will grow based on the normal harvest days. So far that hasn't been a big deal, but it is slightly more difficult to plan which crops to plant towards the end of the season.

Artistan doesn't just affect keg-product prices. Preserves, honey, anything with the label. Just wanted to make sure that was clear. *wink Honey, for example, isn't much work.

Also, just because you choose it in order to reap more cash that way, doesn't mean one has to spam such goods or be interested in making 5 million a year. It's just nice to have a boost to income because, perhaps, you want to grow less crops (space).

I don't find it too much more work to make *some* of such goods vs. just crops. Does take more materials, however.

At any rate - just depends on what type of farmer/player you are, really. I'm kind of a little of everything farmer, in the end.
Yeah Agriculturist isn't working as stated (you get MUCH faster growth rates as of now) so I definitely think Agriculturist is better. If ConcernedApe fixes that and it truly becomes 10% then Artisan would be superior. Considering you can modify save files to switch these as you please, I would take Agriculturist and you can change it later.

I'd argue that Artisan is the superior choice regardless of the type of farmer/player you are (since it also affects animal-based artisan goods), unless one is specifically against processing raw material of any sort.

A 50% bonus to the highest-value items in the game (all artisan goods) is great, no matter how you look at it.
Oh, in terms of pure profit, I personally think Artisan is the better way to go. But "what kind of farmer" one is can mean a lot of things. They both have their upsides - although as already mentioned, if the Agrig. is patched, it'll become much less so.

Which is actually probably a large balance problem, (esp. if they patch Ag.). Artisan should really be more like a 30% profit increase, maybe.

Agreed. Artisan's +50% bonus is insane. I would have expected it to make more sense in the +25% neighborhood.

I think dev's often underestimate/don't fully consider the min/max mentality when they're creating games. lol.
I think that once you reach level 10 you should get nice bonuses though :pleased:
Perhaps the developer could make it so the level 10 rewards are nerfed slightly but when you reach level 10 in all skills it could bump it up a little

<Spoiler>

At year 3 during your grandfathers evaluation of your time on the farm, having made 1 million is worth 7 points, which is more than half the required number (and is 1/3 of the total) to receive the reward.

This is another good reason to pick Artisan If you feel like you might not make this number by year 3 and would like to score the best at the first evaluation.
Wouldn't 25% boost to both be a good balance?
