-Close the trap door at night.
-If they're stuck inside (rain/winter) ensure you grab some Hay from the Hay Bin and plop it in the trough.
--1 Hay per animal.
--Hay Bin requires a Silo.
--Having a Silo on your farm means that cut grass will turn into Hay and be automagically stored in your Silo. Build a Silo before going all Reaper on the grass. (Weeds don't count).
-If it's not raining/winter, then open the trap door in the morning to let them out.
-Ensure there's grass near the coop/barn so your animals can eat.
-Ensure you have a Heater (from Marnie) during the Winter for your base-level Coops/Barns. (Big and Deluxe versions come with a Heater).

When Spring comes, I'll plant Grass Start (from Pierre) in the enclosure, if none appears there.
Then all the way by the South farm exit, there was my chicken. Just sitting there in some dirt near the bottom of that pond. I clicked on her and it said "she was left outside overnight" and she was very grumpy.
I guess she got lost and couldn't find her way back in the dark. :P
