perfect catch giving normal quality fish, is that normal?
on my main save i easily get gold/iridium fish by getting perfect/near perfect catches,
but i made a second save to try the joja stuff instead of junimo things,
and when i try to fish i keep getting silvers when i dont get perfect which is understandible
but when i get a perfect on i get a normal quality fish.
i tried to google what was wrong by seaching how the quallity thing works but all i could find were things telling me that perfect catches always bring up the quallity by 1 so that normal wouldnt be possible.
searching an answer just send me back there so that didnt help either.
i dont even know if this is the right place on steam to ask people about this kind of stuff...

That is odd, the best conclusion I can draw is that you might be mistaken if you got a perfect catch. Are you sure you saw the little "Perfect!" in green text above the fishing bar?

And you have a regular unmodified game? No mods or any of that?

According to the Stardew Valley Wiki page on Fishing[stardewvalleywiki.com] that only applies to fish that would otherwise generate a silver (becomes gold) or gold (becomes iridium) star quality. :stardrop: Normal quality fish will always be regular quality whether it was a perfect catch or not.

but what makes it a normal fish if you're still catching it?

thats understandable but the thing is that, when i get a perfect catch it becomes a normal quality fish but when the green bar gets off for even less then a quarter of a second its a silver...

It looks like it depends on the 'Fishing Zone' you cast the bobber in, and your Fishing Level. It could just be RNG. Posting just links is probably annoying, so I am going to go into a bit of detail about it, and use what NBOX mentioned. There is chart showing the chances for the quality of fish on the wiki, depending the 2 factors.

https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Fishing#Fish_Size_.26_Quality

If you cast in a Fishing Zone 1 (which is typically near the edges of water), you're going to get a Normal Quality fish (100% chance), even if you're level 10 in Fishing. That means you will always get Normal Quality fish even if you get perfects. Like what NBOX mentioned.

On the other extreme, if you cast in a Fishing zone 3, you're pretty likely to get a Silver Quality fish (57% or more), even if you're level 1 in Fishing. If you get a perfect catch with a Silver Quality fish, it will turn into a Gold Quality fish.

The Fishing Zone makes a big difference in the Quality of fish you catch.

I assume you understand the "zone 5", "deep water", or "5 tiles away" base on the first sentence. Even if you casts 5 tiles away from shore, at Fishing level 2 - 5, you can still reel in Silver fish as non-Perfect catch.

You have to reach Fishing level 6 to get Gold as non-Perfect catch. At level 0 - 1, you have (20%) chance to catch regular fish. Since Perfect catch don't boost the quality of regular fish, it explains the title of your question. (The chance is low so it's not noticable as always)

Why would anyone fish outside of the pre-set gold/iridium areas? Like behind that rock in the ocean, or on that submerged log in the mountains, or that specific crook in the river? All you'll get is gold/iridium quality.
