Use speed and defensive food buffs.
You can obtain one from the Adventurer's Guild after slaying 1,000 slimes in the mines regardless of colour.
So long as you're wearing the slime charmer ring, slimes cannot harm you at all!
tip 1, on sundays the merchant gives staircases for jade, so make some crustallariums that produce jade. I have 40 something in my house, and get several hundred staircases a week.
Tip 2. stockpile food, I normally stockpile : spicy eel (dropped from the serpents) crab cakes (dropped from the iridum ore crabs) and a neutral food stack (doesn't give buffs so it doesn't overwrite my speed/luck/combat buff from my earlier food, which is usually iridium star salmonberries. i get hit I eat as many salmonberries as it takes to get me back to full.
If you don't have a pile of salmonberries, sashimi can be crafted 'easily' either using crab pots or the mussel nodes of ginger island.
or you could purchase salad from gus in bulk.
or you could make a big shed, fill it with planting pots, and deluxe retaining soil and pineapples, and use the weekly supply of gold star pineapples.
or you could use something else.
Tip 3. you don't actually *NEED* to go into the skull cavern. if you want iridium ore get to ginger island get 100 golden walnuts and you can buy deconstructors from the Qi shop with Qi gems and then you can deconstruct warps totems purchased with omni geodes for 4 iridium ore each.
doing the ginger island mine will also get you a prismatic shard and ability to upgrade the galaxy sword with the galaxy soul to its final form (also enchant it with crusader so it can kill those damn mummies)
you should buy the lava sword before you go there if you don't have a galaxy sword.
I dont know why you are going into the skull caverns, I only go in when i have a quest and slam down staircases to achieve it.
but know if you can get 4 iridium per 3 omni geodes as a sure thing, and with a robber ring ghosts drop 2 omni geodes. so every 30 ghosts is 80 iridium....
and I can farm ghosts super easily in the dangerous mines, or get omni geodes from other places.
I would recommend to use a fast sword (the galaxy sword is the best option, if you can already obtain it, otherwise the steel falchion or the Lava Katana), as that's by far the best weapon for defensive purposes.
As for fighting, you can fight the slimes the same way as always, so try to get them pinned on a wall while spamming the attack. For Snakes and bats it's best to attack them in a cardinal direction, so that you can utilize the full width of the attack to prevent them from reaching you.
And always take something to eat with you in a slot, that you can easily access fast (like 1-2 places away from the weapon or even on an easily reachable button). Keep in mind, that you can't be damaged while eating and in SP it even pauses the game, so don't think that you need to run away first before healing up.
The food can definitely be adjusted to your needs:
- Salad is a great beginner food, as it costs only 220 from Gus and replenishes quite a bit. It also doesn't have any buffs, so it won't overwrite any other type of food.
- Spicy Eel is definitely recommended to get late into the game, which can be bought for 1 ruby at the desert traveler. Though unless you can produce tons of ruby i wouldn't recommend it as your healing food, but rather just as a buff food.
- Cactus Fruit is an easily available fruit to grow yourself and when planted in the greenhouse, will grant you 1 fruit every 3 days after its initial growth.
- Mango is great as well, but is obviously only available, once you've already done some mining in the skull caverns.
Though i would argue, that the vulcano mines as well as the dangerous mines are both noticably harder than the skull cavern. But getting an Infinity Sword first might definitely help^^
2. Remember why you're there: iridium. If you see copper, iron, gold, or gems while you're down there, even if it's just a second's detour from your path, skip it. Those are easy enough to find in the regular mines, and every moment you're not either diving deeper into the Skull Cavern or collecting iridium is a moment you're not making the best use of all the resources you spent getting down there. (Exception: open chests on treasure floors of course.)
3. There should be very minimal use of your pickaxe. The first major excursion into the caverns you want to be using mostly bombs. You'll probably only be able to afford a few staircases at that point which you'll save for infested floors or for the very long spiral floors. Bombs do very little damage to the player, just tank it and heal as necessary. If you've never used explosive ammo with the slingshot before, give that a try and get familiar with how it works.
4. Ignore enemies as much as possible. You might need to fight off the occasional serpent just to get a moment to breathe, but otherwise keep moving to rock clusters and bombing.
5. Your first major haul of iridium should go primarily into building crystalariums. Use these to duplicate jade. Then trade the jade for staircases. Once you have a large staircase stockpile, you can easily go much deeper and get more iridium for everything else you might use it for.
