tomatoes are vegetables
walked into the cut scene where robin and demetruis are arguing about tomatoes being fruit or vegetable, and i agree its a vegetable, and he says he is disappointed a farmer wouldn't know better, but im disappointed a scientist dousnt know that a tomato falls under both classifications, fruit is the seed bearing part of a plant, vegetable is the edible portion of a plant

Botanically they are classified as berries.

But, to make it even more simple:
Raw tomatoe = Fruit
Tomatoe used in culinary = Veggie
And here I thought this popped up in my Project Zomboid thread!

Well my science teacher also said tomato are fruit class... So during the cutscene I also choose "Fruit" to break their argument.

But I can't blame Robin to be mad, She want fruits but get a full basket of tomatoes LOL

"tomato falls under both classifications, fruit is the seed bearing part of a plant, vegetable is the edible portion of a plant"

This is completely stupid... They are fruits... The vegetable part would be if you ate the tomato plant leaves or stem.

Seed bearing part is the tomato. Scientifically they are fruit/berries. But they tend to get lumped into vegetable generally due to flavor, how they are used and nutrition. How they are used and perceived by the population at large doesn't change what they actually are though.

What's funny is that even in-game, tomatoes are classified as a vegetable when you hover your pointer over one. So take that, Demetrius!

nope any part of a plant that is edible is considered a vegetable, just because it is a fruit dose not mean it is not a vegetable. there is no reason it can not fall under both categories. just like water is both a liquid and fluid

OP is correct; ALL fruits are technically vegetables as well, just a sub-category of vegetable, like how berries are a sub-category of fruit, more or less.

However, it's a fair discussion to have; our scientific knowledge is much newer than the act of eating, so of course our "common knowledge" beliefs or views are often wrong. And now genetic testing is throwing traditional biological classification for loop after loop, calling into question our entire system of categorizing lifeforms. Demetrius getting tomatoes is pretty silly, even if you had no idea about what to classify them as.

Well, you can both be disappinted in each other, then.

Everybody wins!
