My son installed modifications and it's now broken. How can I get a new game? Steam won't let me buy a new game after permanently leaving it from my library and will only restore the old game. That's not going to fix the problem.

If he used a mod manager use it to uninstall the mods. Other than that manually uninstall it if steam won't let you. Usually the save games are easy to identify, just don't delete them, if they were used (saved in game) in a mod however odds are they are broke.

The game will always be in your steam library, unless you went to extraordinary lengths to remove it from there, so you should always be able to reinstall the game.

There's a mods folder in the game folder if they were installed manually. You can just remove them from there. Also you'd need SMAPI to run installed mods so you should just be able to run the game without running SMAPI. And if the game's files have been modified then you could verifying game files in steam and it'll replace the modified files.

Delete the whole game's folder to remove everything, then try reinstalling to see if it worked. If it doesn't, you can check the PC Gaming wiki to find the safe file location to remove it.

Have you tried starting the game from game's .exe file in the game folder? If that doesn't work, delte the Stardew Valley folder that contains the game files and let Steam redownload the game. No need to buy the game again. Even if that would be possible it wouldn't fix your problem.
