Using Backups
Hi, I wanted to install a mod for stardew valley so I backed up the game. before I install the mod I was wondering how I use the backup if the mod corrupts\harms my save?

You'll want to backup your save, as well as your Stardew Valley folder. So, you can do the following:

Press the Windows key + R (or just use Search) and type in %appdata% then look for the Stardew Valley folder which in here is where your actual save is stored. So, you'll either want to create something a .zip of that folder or just copy it and rename it to something else, either works.

Next you'll want to go to your Steam folder in whichever Drive you put it in. For example:

C:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common

You'll also see another Stardew Valley folder and you can do the same as mentioned above to back it up. Try to keep backups as often as you can, especially before installing any new mods and such.

so I should just basically copy the whole stardew valley folder and keep that somewhere safe? what about the backup option when I right click stardew valley from the steam app on my pc, how do I use the backup that it creates in the Backups folder?

I don't really use the Backups option (the one under Properties), so I wouldn't know but I would assume it would just be the same thing as making a .zip folder or just copying it somewhere else (or not). But this can help you out: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8794-yphv-2033

thanks for the link, I was just wondering, if I copied the entire stardew valley folder, then deleted the original one( if a mod damaged it), then pasted the copied version back, would that work?

Yep, that does work and has saved me a bit of having to re-mod the game again. Though, most mods shouldn't really break your game too much anyways, but it is good to always keep backups (even backups of original files if you plan to get something that is a replacer of any sort, though any sort of replacer mod will tell you to backup your files of that anyways).

It should work yes, although your save isnt in that actual game folder.

The save is in C:\Users\YOURNAMEHERE\AppData\Roaming\StardewValley
Replacing YOURNAMEHERE with whatever you have.
You can always just back the save up then if something happens with the stardew valley files just verify the integrity of the files or uninstall it and reinstall it from steam.

Thanks, so I just go into the saves folder and copy the file with my IGN. and then if I need to replace a broken save with it I just delete the save there and paste the copy I took of the working save. if that's right, thanks so much for your guys's help [Huntress] ℒ๏ℵє ฬ๏lℱ and Daitetsu

Yea thats right. Just replace the full folder.
E.g. My IGN is lonewolf, i would replace the folder called 'LoneWolf_11472263' or something like that, has a bunch of random numbers after it.

And np. Hope you enjoy the game and the mod. So far i havent had any issues with mods, although ive only got single file ones, such as one to change my pet =]
