can I miss the Luau festival ?

apparently. Yes. It doesn't really ultimately matter if you do though. But apparently

If you get a really great result in the Luau, it actually boosts your friendship levels with many of the NPCs because they liked the potluck

Thus, if you've got them maxed out already, or, don't have anything to success the potluck with, or don't care, Then the Luau is just a thing.. that happens.. and passes....
