Where is 'safe' to build?
So I'm in the dead of Winter Y1, and I've decided to map out my farm as I have nothing else to do really. I was hoping to get some assurance of the general 'safety' for placing thing around my farm.

Acts of Nature Meteors withstanding, is everything within my Farm's screen generally considered safe? Can I use that top right above the dump chest? Will any house upgrades expand the house's footprint itself? Am I ignorant of something I need to keep in mind?

I am really just trying to find a good place to continue being a packrat and have my collection of chests to finally get (kinda) organized and I'm afraid of placing a chest in a bad spot.

Thanks!

The house upgrades will only affect the inside space, not the outside.

Everywhere is safe, and I don't think meteors can land on buildings.

Meteors can't land on buildings, but they can land on crops.

- No, your farm is not generally safe. Lightning can be a problem and I've also heard many people say their animals were killed by wolves when not fenced in.
- Yes, you can use the area above the dump chest.
- No, house upgrades will not expand the house's footprint.
- You can build extra barns or coops and use them for chests, machines, etc.

Warning (something I just learned): lightning can destroy whatever it hits and there is NO way to completely stop it. Lightning rods do NOT stop lightning from hitting anything (this is per CA https://twitter.com/ConcernedApe/status/695190053484560384 ), they are purely for making batteries. So if you leave a chest outside, it could get hit. This is where I'm stuck now for a new design. I hate going in and out of buildings just to put something away.

lol That's what I said.

I hate fences because they degrade too quickly so this is what I do: You have to have fence posts to hold up the gates, but otherwise I use trees to make a fence. You can leave them grown or cut them down and just leave the stump.

Truth be told I haven't seen fences degrade all that quickly. Some of my stone fences are 2 seasons old and I haven't had the need to replace any.

You've been lucky then. I had hardwood fences fall apart the second season I had them.

Also, are you married? Spouses will occationally fix fences.

That's concerning.. But I guess I can store most general things inside, especially the more valuable things and just keep the random dumps outside. Least I don't need to worry about typical things too much.

Thanks everyone!

The last update said the Lightning rods DO help with lightning, not a gurarantee though,

But wolves howl when its going to rain though or storm whichever one it is. I honestly think its just a bug.

Actually, as of the most recent patch, Lightning Rod CAN divert a lightning strike. It IS NOT a 100% chance so you are right about it not being able to completely divert it, but if there is an INACTIVE Lightning Rod (one that is not producing a battery) nearby, then there is a higher chance that lightning will strike it. Unlike how it worked previously, I feel it's a huge improvement.

My iron fences have lasted a whole year. :)

You may consider to put your kegs, beehouses, chests, etc. in the barn, which is the safest place to hide.
jfoytek Apr 9, 2016 @ 3:49pm
Barns are best used for Chests! If you don't keep any chests inside a barn atleast keep your bombs safely in a chest inside the barn....

Lighting hits chest with bombs, chest is near the rest of the chests.... boom lightning strike takes out all your chests because you filled one with bombs!
