abigail won the egg hunt even though i got 8 eggs. i wonder if it has anything to do with her being married to me, or maybe beacuse i won the prize last year, maybe the game chooses the next up?

I wondered about that too when I first started playing. Then we found the magic number, as AceTheGolden said, is 9. I finally got 9 and can now confirm for myself that number is correct, I got the hat.

The villagers and the player participate in an Egg Hunt. This starts by talking to Mayor Lewis. The player must gather 9 colored eggs, or else Abigail will win. If the player wins, they will receive a Straw Hat as a reward. If they already have this, they will receive 1,000g.

Yeah its 9 eggs. I suggest when you start going to the left then down then to the right. left twards.. th tree. then down tward Haley and Jodis houses then righ to the sewers then up to the Mayors House

Reading this makes me think of rune factory tides of destiny. The villagers would go easy on you during festivals the first year, then after that they became a whole lot harder to win.
