upgrade swords?

when i was went to the blacksmith there was no option to upgrade my sword, where do i do this?

Adventure guild or findable loot in the mines.

The Adventure's Guild next to the mines. You also can get some from loot from monsters, so if you don't want to spend money on getting better weapons, kill as many monsters as you can and get as far into the mines as possible. You also get a pretty sweet sword for free if you keep going in the mines for a while

You have to die in the mines 5 times before the Blacksmith suggests you get a better sword and allows the upgrades.

Spoilers about a non-mines way to get a bomb-ass weapon (Has nothing to do with the plot, but some people may want to look for it themselves):
There's a rare chance to find a "Broken Trident" item in a treasure chest while fishing. It's a level 11 dagger that does 15-27 damage. OP af

When you find a Prismatic Shard, hold it, don't sell or give it to Gunther (Museum Manager). With this gem, you can make one special weapon in the Calico Desert.

You can buy weapons the adventurers guild. Its that little building next to the mine. Later in the game, if you get a prismatic shard then you need to get to the desert and hold in while standing in the middle of three pillars( youll know which ones when you see them) after that it gives you the best sword i the game.
