So I feel like being part of this thread and giving my two cents!
So the Clear #1 for me was Abby I just love the Purple hair its a great look though she is kinda quirky, off to hide in a cemetary or some random loaction on the map, or closed up in her room she is a bit of a paradox but its pretty cool....
Leah is the clear second option, she likes nature seems outdoorsie but she is a bit too much of a tree hugger for my taste...
Maru is third place, (Please don't label me as being Racist, some of my closest friends in the Navy where Black) its just that my personal romantic tastes just don't swing in that direction.
4rth Penny, the goodie two shoes book worm, the type of girl that would no doubt lecture me for this or insist that I do this, not intested in a book worm no matter how cute she is!
Haley, the clear last place candidate, I really don't care if she is misunderstood but she is the type of girl that needs to be dumped a half dozen times and bring her down from her high and lofty perch, looking down at the world.
On a side note, if Emily was part of the runnings she would give Abby some clear competition as I like her outgoing spirit and friskyness!
I think people just see Haley and immediately slap a Stereotype Filter on everything she does and says without really paying attention to context. Which, I dunno... more Haley for me, then?
Landwalker??? You understand that based off the choices you make in the game that everyones game experience is VERY different.... The first time I ever talked to her, she gave me total attitude about how I was not worth her time!!! She was also the last character I unlocked in the introduction's.... As I never came across her. And when I did come across her, well I never decided to go out of my way to look for her again, after the very rude introductory comments she made to me!
2. Elliott
3. Elliott
Went with Sebas and regretted it for days. Such a crybaby. Please just go dig yourself in your cellar.
1. Leah cause she's cute
2. Penny
3. Abi
Result? No dialogue like what you mentioned.
Now, maybe I somehow missed something. Maybe there's some dialogue somewhere I didn't find, in which case, I'm open to being proven wrong. But that's what I'm talking about. People claim Haley acts a particular way / says certain things, but when you actually look at it, that isn't true. It's just that everything she says passes through some sort of stereotype filter before people process it and remember it.
Haley says "If it weren't for those horrendous clothes you might actually be cute," and yeah, that doesn't sound great up-front. But, again, context. Haley has basically no social skills and her life to date has been pretty much defined by appearances. She has no subtlety, and she's trying to comment on the only thing she knows how to comment on.
And let's be honest for real here: If Abigail said that exact same line, nobody would bat an eye at it because Abigail's appearance doesn't trigger "Mean Girls Stereotype."
Males:
Elliott > Sebastian > Sam > Alex > Harvey
-Elliott is handsome, prince charmingly confident (the attractive kind of arrogance), an author, a nature fanatic and cares not for waiting when it comes to getting his gal some fine wine at bars! Drawbacks: Terrible father, not very considerate of others, not very brave, doesn't enjoy getting hands dirty much
-Sebastian is your typical 'too cool for school' type. Motorbike, cigarettes, emo attitude, borderline gothic appearance, computer programmer and heavily introverted. The latter two elements are what I find worthy of second male bachelor.
-Sam, your super saiyan rock star.. that ignores you for gameboy games and guitar playing. But has a cool band and makes decent music which you get credit for inspiring.
-Alex is a jock with air occupying 75% of his physical neurological structure. We would not click.
-Harvey, the town doctor... gives me the creeps everytime I look at him or he talks. He's always hiding or cowardly. He does aerobics with the townswomen. The list goes on... he's a creep.
Females:
Haley > Abigail > Maru = Penny > Leah
-Haley is a genuine, spicy/electric sweetheart once she warms up passed the dirty farmer stranger stages.
-Abigail is into video games and has a unique adventurous personality.
-Maru and Penny are intelligent and have a certain kindness to them, with some of their own quirks here and there.
-Leah is an artist.. but also an alcoholic.
That's just my opinion though of course.
That said, liking alcohol or being an alcoholic doesn't make someone a bad person whatsoever. To a lot of people they fit in and are even good friends / entertainment. For me, even the hint of it shatters romantic possibilities. Keywords the hint of it
I chose Haley to go to the flower dance with me (thank you for your tips earlier btw) and I'm going to marry her. I think she is in fact the one who will have the most interesting growth as a character and personality, and I hope to find out her story from her.
Glad that the tips worked out for you! Also glad that you're happy with your choice. I (obviously) really think Haley is one of the most underappreciated characters in the whole game, so I'm completely on board the "convert people to Haley" train. =P
1. Definitely Penny. Her character and background story are by far the best, and she is beautiful, too. The only character that doesn't look like a highschool teen.
2. I guess Leah. She's ok, but a bit boring.
Other than that I don't like the women. Haley is arrogant and shallow, Abigail is just a "wanna-be special" kid stuck in her gothic/emo phase, and Maru is unsympathetic.
Men:
I really don't know, I guess Harvey is fine, and Elliot. I really don't know why everyone wants to marry Shane, I had him at 5 hearts and he was still the same jerk like in the beginning. I guess it's true that women like a**sholes.
While I'm not on the Shane Train he becomes much nicer around 6-8 hearts.Whenever I bump into him he says hi and he'll tell me he's actually having a good day or he'll take about how he loves his aunty's animals. He loathes himself and we don't know what brought him to Stardew Valley but I don't think he's had the best life so far.
Pfffffffft.... he just likes being outside. He's very physical, and he ended up identifying with the jock archetype. But as you get to know him, you find out there's a lot more to him than that -- it's just that he's never had the confidence necessary to engage in more intellectual endeavors.
I married him and have no regrets at all. <3 ...except that he's, you know, a 2D character in a video game. :B
