OR, alternatively, you get them in pairs. No idea how that works, since the only cows you get are milk cows, but I know nothing about cows and how they breed. However, right clicking on the animal to the heart screen, and to the right should be an option to toggle whether or not your animals breed.
Actually, there only needs to be one, and as long as the breed option is turned on, there is a very small random chance of them having a child. You cannot actually impregnate them the way you can in HM, it's 100% up to random chance.
Personally, I have no idea what the actual chance is. I had my cow give birth once in 2 years (with only 1 cow), a pig give birth 3 nights in a row (with only 1 adult pig), and my three goats had between them 1 kid per season for a year and have had no kids since. So I think it's just up to the RNG personally.
I would LOVE the ability to give them a miracle potion like in HM though.
