Tree spacing

How close together can trees grow? Can they grow like:

Normal (non fruit) trees need a single tile between them, you can place them in a solid line however every 2nd tree will remain in it's 2nd growth stage. Fruit trees 'must' have 2 tiles between them and no debris or tilled ground under them otherwise they will not grow.

The second option, if you plant them like in the first one above then they can only reach a certain growth stage.

Fruit trees have to be XOXXOX to grow at all, normal trees have to be XOXOX to grow correctly. You CAN plant them as OOOOO but only half of them will grow.

I personally like to do that anyway though, because i can chop down the ones that grow, replant a seed, and then chop down the ones from before as soon as they grow, giving me a pretty steady supply of wood.
