Lots of crops, lots. LOOOOOTS.

"Each crop harvested (regardless of crop type or quality) is worth 8 experience points. Your experience level is increased once you sleep if you have harvested enough crops that day and you are able to gain multiple levels per night."

1875 to reach level 10.

tons and tons of crops, today I just got level 10 in farming.
You can plant the cheapest crop, but you might lose profit. I'd just level it up through profit tbh.

I don't think there's any crops which give a negative return on investment, however I don't think crops that require the scythe (Wheat / Amaranth) give exp at all.
Crops and lots of them. Do mind that seasonal wild plants count towards foraging and not farming.

I also don't think that crops that produce multiple results per harvest (e.g. potatoes, blueberries, cranberries) give multiple XP. It's the act of the harvest, not the number of crops you collect.

And now that I've asserted that I am 100% sure someone will provide evidence that I'm wrong.

Sunflowers, you lose money unless you buy them from Joja Mart but even then the loss of time planting feels like a loss. They do make oil 4x faster than corn does

.... You can make oil from sunflowers and corn? Do you just put them in the normal oil maker?

Farm experience is quantity over quality. So for Spring 1, Year 1, the best crops for this are potatoes, since you pull up multiple potatoes in 1 harvest (which lets you get level 6-8 farming by Summer 1, a powerful start because you can start craft quality sprinklers ASAP and end up with this result by Fall 8, Year 1):
