Can A Vegan Find Success In Stardew Valley
Got the game, but haven't really delved into it yet. I want to play as a vegan. Possible?

What do you even mean by that? You are not forced to eat anything at all if you dont want to

Play the Joja route and you can just pay for upgrades with gold made by farming. No fishing or animals required.

He could name his character "Vegan"
I think the only thing "killable" in this game is fish. No farm animals here.

You can kill bats and slimes and worms. But at least you dont have to eat them. And during farmwork you could maybe swallow a bug or kill one of your bees. Its a risk.

What I mean is, basically, can I be a successful farmer without raising animals?

This made my daily task of 'Find the Vegan" amazingly easy. :claugh:

By the way, it's interesting to note that when I eat with friends and family, it's usually other people who always bring up the fact that I'm vegan, not the other way around. I'm actually sick of talking about it. Hate to shatter the myth though ...

Then yes. Farming is far more profitable. Animal goods you might require for the over arching collection quest can be found at a weekly vender who sells random goods.

Yes you can be a successful, infact animals for me anyway are just for fun as they are just money pits anyway, but you need them to complete the bundles, unless you wait to buy from the pig merchant. Most income will come from the various berries during the seasons.
Also the dev decided that he's not going to implement butchering which is a shame as it might help bring more revenue. I will be downloading the mod.

I dunno how vegan principles work exactly (nor do I care enough to find out), but you do take great care of your animals, if that's worth anything.

Keep the doors open, don't place any fences, provide enough grass and the animals basically live in complete freedom. They even go back to their coop/barn voluntarily and refuse to go out in winter. They behave more like spoiled pets than livestock.

Or you can just ignore your principles or not do role playing. It's just a game still.

Either way, keeping livestock is fully optional, though one of the 'main quests' in this game does require a fair amount of animal products for some of its 'quest trees'. There is an alternative 'main quest' so you won't need animal stuff but that has you helping a Wallmart-esque company.
Though even that quest is optional.

Yes... but why you dont want to have animals? its not like you have to eat them (theres no butchering in this game)

there are vegan food you can cook too

you can catch fish and throw them back in the water by dropping them out of the inventory

Yes, and like nearly every other video game, most people like to put themselves in the role of the protagonist.

@OP: Like other posters have said, Stardew Valley is very accomodating to different playstyles, and it's entirely possible to play as a vegetable-product-only farmer. As a bonus, all the fertilizer items in-game are 100% organic. ;)
