Unable to access Adventurer's Guild?

Ok, so unless I've got mixed up you need to head into the mines (and kill) in order to gain access? I thought once I'd killed something I had to speak to Marlon? If that's the case he always seems to be in the guild which I can't access.

any help or input would be helpful

There's some initial quest about going into the mines - maybe a certain level reached, I don't recall offhand. After that another quest where you have to kill a certain number of slimes to gain entrance to the Guild. They're separate quests and any killing you've done before the 2nd quest pops, doesn't count.
