Animals sad for no reason
I have 4 chickens and 4 cows. They have hay every day and I leave them out for fresh grass. I pet them every day, get the milk from the cows and make sure that the door is closed at night. But whenever I check their status it says "... looks sad." Is this a bug?

That's very odd if what you say is true. Is it every animal or just some, do they increase in hearts even though they say they are sad?

On the days you don't let them out to graze on grass, make sure you are actually taking the hay and placing it along the backside of the barn. The silo will automatically fill up the hay dispenser, but until the final barn/coop upgrade it will not automatically put it out for your animals to eat.

Hope that helps!

thanks, for the replies, that's really fast :D I feed them hay everyday and it affects both, cows and chickens. I have the feeling like they only increase slowly in hearts due to the fact that they are sad... but it is spring at the moment and I guess I should remove the heater, that might help xD

Cows need a fence to become happy (chickens don't). Does your cows have a fence?

I actually have the same problem. I have the deluxe coop and barn, so automated feeding. The animals get let out every morning into the fenced in yard which has grass in it and then I shut them back in at night. And most of the time, most of my animals are sad. I don't understand it.

Do they even have grass to eat? Or can they reach it? They all go to the nearest patches of grass to eat those daily. If you only have a few pieces or nothing at all (due to you clearing it out or them eating it all) they won't be happy! I've had my best luck keeping the feeding bin full and letting them out. Every once in awhile, a few pieces of hay are missing on the feeding bin, so I know that someone didn't find everything they needed outside.

My cows (and goats and pig and chikens and bunnies and dinosaur), are happy even though they roam around free.

Animals can sometimes be sad, but all the time sounds strange.. The heater shouldn't affect anything, if it's not moving it's not on, and it's automatically only on in winter.

These are 2 screenshots of the deluxe coop and the outside area. The cows are normally happy but the chickens are usually not. They have food inside, can reach the grass outside easily and there is a fence. Do they maybe not like to be in the same area as cows?

hm, no idea. the screenshots look fine. If you pet them, do they show a heart or this dark could thingy? How long do you have them and how many hearts did they gain in that time?

My lizard dinosaur was sad without a reason about 3 times as far as I remember (With 1 1/2 - 2 hearts and it happened in fall of year 2). But it didn't seem to be any negative effect with my poor little dino at all.

Maybe it is to much space for them. *Just a thought, I dont know* XD
Because you only have four chicken and so much space. Me has only the first chicken coop and with four chicken in it. And they are happy with there space XD

Hey! Sorry for the crazy late response, only just found this post while I was looking for the reason myself. What I've noticed is that every day I visit my chickens and cows inside their coop and barn they are indeed sad, but as soon as I leave them out they become really happy! Since usually people pet their farm animals while they're still inside since it's easier, did you ever check their moods outside? Because both my cows and chickens roam the land freely and are really happy while outside, but sad in the morning when I still need to leave them out.
Hope it helps!
Again, sorry I'm messaging so late, perhaps you've already quit but hope it helps people.

On the Wiki it talks about how there is a caveot and when they get really happy it can roll over and reset to them being sad.

It is a bug where maxed out animals can lose thier happiness when you pet them. There is a mod on the workshop to fix the issue.
