Yes. You'll need the lures (mostly the Trap Lure) in order to catch the really hard fish, like the Legend.

Yes, because Trap Bobber can't be equipped on fiberglass or bamboo. Plus magnet bait and treasure hunter will prove useful for artifacts.

Yes you should upgrade to Iridium. Everything everyone above me has said plus it also makes the fishing minigame MUCH easier.
