They can be handy to keep livestock in place, as well as keep the grass from growing all over the place. But other than that they are mostly estetics.

I never put one myself ever. Supposedly it prevents unwanted destruction of your crops with wild grass or possibly animals but the latter should be fenced around their coop and building anyway.

Later on when you start getting some money, the common items such as stone, wood and ore (iron mainly) will become a lot easier to get. You can purchase wood for 10g and stone for 20g at Robin's place, and incidently purchasing wood and burning is cheaper than purchasing the coal from Clint. So don't worry too much about the common materials, you'll have gold enough to spend on them within the 2nd year.

A while back i had a stone wall around my crops but i found that my crops were being destroyed by spawning wood/stone (assumed maybe from the decaying wall) so i took them down and didnt bother with them at no consequences. Since then i havent had any walls around crops but i do keep walls around my animals, to keep them in one place, although now i havent had any random spawning wood/stone next to the walls.

Putting fences around your crops does prevent weeds from spreading to them and it prevents trees from sprouting over to your crops as well.

I used fences when I had my outside slime ranch. The wife kept repairing them and they were hardwood and steel. But the rare slime still got out now and then.

But if fences stop the spread of weeds and trees... surely paths around crops does the same. I haven't had any weeds spreading to my crops. O.o

I don't bother fencing my plants. They aren't running around like my chickens are. <.<

I used to have popups in the morning saying that weeds were destroying my crops. I haven't seen anybody have open paths around their crops. Most people seem to either grow the crops close together(which is also a good idea if you're growing Cauliflower, Melons, or Pumpkins), or they have put paths in between their crops.

I got the same things too telling me that my crops were getting destroyed but nothing at all changed so I'd guess it's not always true or maybe it's something else on the farm map...

Not sure what you mean by open paths....there's no dirt tiles around my crops, there are only paths and crop tiles, a scarecrow and some torches. Never seen that popup before.... ever. xD Even before I had paths I've never seen it actually....

open paths as in dirt, as opposed to a placed item of some kind(ie. wooden, stone, or crystal paths).

All I was saying was.... shouldn't paths do the same as fences in preventing weeds spreading?

I don't think grass grows over paths so yeah. You should be alright by setting a path around.
