So how's everybody organizing their stuff?
I always run into this problem in games with lots of items. I like to try and keep one or two of each item around for the sake of both collecting and having them in case I need them later, not to mention all the actually necessary stuff like crops and animal products for making artisan goods, ores and ingots, tools, seeds, ect. At this point I have a bunch of chests loaded with different categories of items. I don't like having them all in a line since that doesn't look nice in my house or outside it, but keeping them in barns just adds an extra trot just to put stuff away.

I'd love to see an organization mod or update of some kind - maybe a master chest that transfers items to other assigned chests - but in the meantime, I'm curious how others are handling it. Do you have a system, keep your chests all in a line, or just sell pretty much everything?

i have one chest for crafting all of the metal bars. I have one chest for monster stuff like slimes, void essences and bat wings. I have one farming chest with seeds and such. I have one gem chest. I have one kegging/jarring/crafting chest and one other chest for misc. stuff like for the grange display, etc.

This is a common request, I hope the chest space is increased as well.

Leaving tons of fish/food and all other random items lying in chests has be an invitation for pests or something.

Well, you can use the fridge in your kitchen as storage, and when you go to cook it will use items from your fridge if you don't have them in your inventory. But yeah, I wouldn't mind having some more storage options even if the difference between them and a chest are purely cosmetic, like I was pretty disappointed the dresser I bought from Robin can't be used as storage for all my hats, rings, and boots.

My method as of right now is I use the fridge for storing ingredients, a chest by the kitchen for cooked dishes, a chest by the hallway for random foraging items, a chest by the shipping box for seeds and food I want to hold on to, and a chest on the other side of my house for crafting items.

If I have a fridge I try to only put zero star foods inside.

I usually use

One Chest for ores/ingots/quartz/coal/slime/void/solar/bombs

One Chest for fish

One Chest for holding what I'm working on canning or brewing from the last major crop

One chest for mushrooms and wild berries if I went for the mushroom cave

The rest is usually random dump chests.

If I have a green house I usually put seed and crop chests in there.

I usually keep a chest outside the mine, and sometimes other locations incase I get full. Or want to enter the mine right now without going back home or entering with less room for loot. In my third playthrough I have my chest outside a mine, and one on the beach.

I'm thinking of putting one in the town incase I want to trashcan loot but have a full inventory. Or putting a chest outside the house of who I"m dating filled with thier favorite gifts.

I have:-
  • A chest for my chickens (Will be for all animals when i get some, only eggs in it atm)
  • A chest for my trees (seeds at the moment)
  • A chest for my crop seeds and tools
  • A chest for grown crops
  • A chest for ores, coal and bars
  • A chest for foraged items
  • A chest for fish and shell items
  • A chest for trash (next to the recycler)
  • A chest for crafted things and wood/stone
  • A chest hidden with quality crops for the festival
  • A chest next to the town exit for gifts i can give to residents
  • A chest for flowers
  • A chest for my bees (honey and flower seeds for each season)
  • A chest inside for unused weapons, boots and rings
  • A chest for clay (i couldnt think where to put this so at the moment it has a chest to itself)
  • A chest for artisan (Artisan goods/ingrediants to make the artisan things)
  • A chest for monster loot
  • A chest for things i gathered for the community center bundles
  • And finally a chest for my mushrooms in my cave

I think thats them all, yes i do like to sort my items but i get a bit confused since there are no lables on chests.
Also each chest i have near its respective thing. So my animal goods chest is next to the exit to my coop enclosure, my crop one is next to my crops, tree one next to the trees, artisan one next to my preserving bins, ore one next to the furnaces, fish one next to the pond and so on.
Ones that dont have an area i can put them in are to the right of my house above the shipping bin.

I suppose you could label chests by putting different floors in front of them like gravel, wood, ect.

Wow, people are really organized sometimes. But isn't it a pain in the butt to march back and forth to put things in their respective spots at the end of the day? Or is there a better way to manage it? I often find I pick up a lot of forageables and stone and wood and fish just running about, not to mention ores and geodes and monster drops if I've been in the mines. It's an annoyance to have to spend the last hour before bedtime running back and forth to put everything away. Some good ideas here, though, like one near town for gifts! Those chests won't be touched at all?

I'd love to see visual chest labels. I know there's a mod where you can name your chest and hover over it to see what you called it, but an instant-look thing would be great. Something like item frames in Minecraft, maybe, where you can stick items on display? Both nice for decoration and great for organizing.

There isnt really a better way no, but the chests i have for my farm things, say i pick up some eggs as i leave the walled off coop i drop it in the chest on my way out, same for crops and trees.
As for other items, im a little ocd about it, i cant just have a chest with a bunch of random stuff in it. They have to be organised, hence having clay in its own chest xD
I dont mind spending a couple of ingame hours at the end of the day to sort out my inventory.

Terraria has chest labeling but I never really used it. I always used different colored chests there with a sign behind each color group. In minecraft you have hoppers with filters and can make auto sorting machines (Which is something I've missed a few times in Stardew)

Some items in stardew I'd rather they don't have a star tier at all such as quartz. It makes very little price difference and they all smelt down to zero star. Star rank quartz is also really annoying when adventuring through the mine/dungeon.

How am I sorting? I have a level 2 house with the fridge, 4 chests lying around the "dining area" (or for what passes for it), and one chest nearby in a field. They more than likely have dupilcate items in each and every one of them and I don't care atm.

I do mean to get it sorted officially. If there's a way to label your chests, I'm ignorant as how to do it yet, or haven't cared to pay attention to it. :P

Scratch putting a gift chest inside people's houses. I put a gift chest into hailey's house and it vanished completely. Worst possible day to lose it too, its her birthday and that was all I had she liked.
